Fujitsu Gets Power Boost With New Servers

Published by: anonym 2009-01-08

Fujistsu Technology Solutions Tuesday released two new PrimePower servers.

The PrimePower 650 and PrimePower 850, like other servers in the PrimePower family, contain 675-MHz SPARC64 GPTM chips, and offer "high-end features in a midrange box," Richard McCormack, vice president of marketing for FTS, told ServerWatch.

The 650 and 850 come with dual power supplies, dual feeds, and reliability capabilities. The servers also contain a dedicated system control facility, a feature that up until now was available only in high-end servers, McCormack said.

Unlike other PrimePower servers, however, the 650 and 850 are available only in a rackmount footprint. They are basically a computer node and have no storage capacity inside. McCormack describes the CPU-only server as a "cluster in a rack," not all that dissimilar in concept from a server blade, only much thicker and heavier.

The 650 and 850 are ideal for an enterprise whose storage needs are being satisfied but that is looking to increase its computing power. ISPs and ASPs are two target customer types, McCormack said. He also noted that the servers work well with SANs.

The 650 and 850 can hold up to 8 and 16 processors, respectively. The 650 has 20 PCI slots, and the 850 has 40. The servers are designed this way to enable enterprises to address specific application requirements and without trading off I/O for processing power. Based on the type of applications running (e.g., CRM, ERP, e-mail, or Internet services), I/O and processors can be balanced to achieve configuration equilibrium.

The PrimePower 650 is priced starting at $180,000 for a configuration of four 675-MHz processors and 4 GB of main memory.

Although the 650 and 850 are available for immediate purchase, there is currently an approximate four-week shipping delay. The servers are expected to be shipping in volume by late December.
