Media Design in*Progress this week announced the release of Emili Lite, the first XML editor for Macintosh. Emili Lite is the demo version of the commercial Emili XML editor, which is scheduled to be released at the end of April.
Emili Lite enables developers to work with XML, without requiring a detailed knowledge of the XML specification. This is accomplished by providing dialogs for custom tags and common markup constructs. Emili integrates a clone of the comprehensive Emacs text editor using a graphical user interface. The editor adapts the user interface to the document type declaration (DTD), creating a custom authoring environment.
Extensible Markup Language (XML) is an open document standard for structured content which was developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The language was created for vendor-neutral data interchange, media-independent publishing, collaborative authoring, and the processing of documents by intelligent agents. XML enables developers to design custom elements and other specialized markup constructs. The W3C recently announced that the next version of HTML will be based on the XML, so it will become increasingly more important for developers.

Emili Lite supports editing with Extensible HTML (XHTML). Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 supports XML, as will the upcoming release of Netscape Navigator 5.0. The editor can export an XML document as HTML, enabling developers to take advantage of XML while supporting older web browsers.
