NTT Embraces Open Source
Published by: admin 2008-11-19

The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), the Beaverton, Ore.-based organization dedicated to advancing Linux, today announced that Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Co. (NTT) has joined the group.

NTT, the world's largest telecom company, will help advance OSDL's Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) effort. CGL is the spin off the open-source operating system aimed at network operators, telecommunications equipment manufacturers and network equipment manufacturers.

OSDL recently unveiled its CGL definition version 2.0, which sets forth improvements in security, high-availability and clustering. NTT and other telecom leaders have pledged to incorporate CGL 2.0 support into future products.

"We are joining OSDL to contribute [to] establishing Linux as the computing platform for telecom carrier IT systems, said NTT senior vice president Yuji Inoue in a statement.

NTT will also help OSDL with its continuing work on the Data Center Linux definition.

The addition of NTT to the OSDL roster marks the second Asian outfit to join in recent days. Last week, desktop Linux proponent Beijing Co-Create Open Source Software Co. Ltd. became the first Chinese company to sign on to OSDL.
