On Wednesday, the RosettaNet members said they would promote adoption and implementation of its e-business standards within China's high technology industry and multinational companies.

RosettaNet said the alliance builds on China's existing support for RosettaNet XML-based standards, including combined government funding of more than $51 million through 2003.

Representatives of RosettaNet board member companies include Amkor, Arrow, Cisco, IBM, Intel, HP, Microsoft, Motorola, National Semiconductor, NEC, Oracle, Siemens, Sun Microsystems and webMethods. They joined representatives of China's Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) at a signing ceremony in San Jose, Calif., Wednesday morning to seal the agreement.

MOST is a central government agency under the State Council which is responsible for the nation's science and technology activities.

RosettaNet said the alliance, which will take form as a RosettaNet China affiliate, would fuel economic growth in China by enhancing trading partner relationships and increasing e-commerce business opportunities for technology companies. The consortium said the adoption of its standards will lead to improved operational efficiencies and lower transaction costs.

"Working with RosettaNet is a crucial first step to enhancing the high-tech industry's e-commerce and supply chain management processes," said Li Wu Qiang, deputy general director, Department of High-Tech Development & Industrialization at MOST. "We expect that our efforts to promote the development and adoption of supply chain standards throughout China will result in a more streamlined trading network, allowing companies to become more competitive within the global economy."

The consortium said it will work with MOST and representatives of the China Association for Standardization (CAS) to form a new e-commerce and e-logistic standard division in the coming weeks. That division will sponsor and manage the operational and implementation activities of RosettaNet China.
