Cloudscape announced JBMS, an embeddable Java-based data management system.
JBMS is designed to support slim client platforms, enabling smart
applications that are both well-suited to a distributed environment and
small enough to operate efficiently over the Internet. The vendor has also
signed its first alliance with Tandem, a Compaq company, with which it will
implement joint marketing activities.

JBMS is currently in use at 25 beta sites and has been integrated with
software from Electric Press, Marimba, Rexton International, SoftCom,
Tilden Park Software, and Vision Software. It is designed to be embedded
within applications that are deployed over the Internet to a mobile
workforce, providing these applications with access to a low-overhead,
extensible relational database.

JBMS is already available with introductory pricing at $495 for a developer
license. From March 1998, customers will be able to download a free limited
version of JBMS from the vendor's web site.
