Continuing its aggressive acquisition spree to fill in missing pieces to its evolving computing strategy, HP moved to acquire identity management software maker TruLogica for an undisclosed sum.
Privately held TruLogica is a Dallas-based provider of software that automates the process of managing user privileges across multiple technology systems to quickly let end users access to the IT resources they are authorized to use.

By acquiring the small company, the Palo Alto, Calif. HP adds a vital
piece to its OpenView management software platform, a key ingredient of its
company-wide "Adaptive Enterprise" strategy for providing automated
computing resources on the fly.
This strategy rivals IBM's on-demand computing initiative and
outfits such as VERITAS Software and Sun Microsystems play in this space as well.

HP plans to integrate TruLogica technology into its HP OpenView Select Access
software to form a full federated identity management offering, automating
access control tasks such as user activation or deactivation, which are
usually done manually.

Ultimately, TruLogica software will reduce the policy-based tasks from days
to hours.
One industry analyst, Jason Bloomberg of XML and Web services research firm
ZapThink, discussed the buy.
"HP is leveraging several open standards, including management standards
that HP has been championing, as well as integrating TruLogica with their
recent SelectAccess and Talking Blocks acquisitions to offer an end-to-end
identity and access management solution to enterprises who are building
Service-Oriented Architectures, (define)" Bloomberg told

The purchase would be the latest piece of the larger computing strategy pie
HP has been regularly filling in the last several months. Just last month,
HP moved to purchase Novadigm and Consera Software to beef up its automation capabilities.
In 2003, HP acquired Persist Technologies for information lifecycle
management, Talking Blocks for Web services management and Baltimore
Technologies' Select Access business for federated identity management.
