HP to Acquire Identity Management Software Maker
Published by: jane 2008-11-19

Continuing its aggressive acquisition spree to fill in missing pieces to its evolving computing strategy, HP moved to acquire identity management software maker TruLogica for an undisclosed sum.

Privately held TruLogica is a Dallas-based provider of software that automates the process of managing user privileges across multiple technology systems to quickly let end users access to the IT resources they are authorized to use.

By acquiring the small company, the Palo Alto, Calif. HP adds a vital piece to its OpenView management software platform, a key ingredient of its company-wide "Adaptive Enterprise" strategy for providing automated computing resources on the fly.

This strategy rivals IBM's on-demand computing initiative and outfits such as VERITAS Software and Sun Microsystems play in this space as well.

Ultimately, TruLogica software will reduce the policy-based tasks from days to hours.

One industry analyst, Jason Bloomberg of XML and Web services research firm ZapThink, discussed the buy.

"HP is leveraging several open standards, including management standards that HP has been championing, as well as integrating TruLogica with their recent SelectAccess and Talking Blocks acquisitions to offer an end-to-end identity and access management solution to enterprises who are building Service-Oriented Architectures, (define)" Bloomberg told internetnews.com.

The purchase would be the latest piece of the larger computing strategy pie HP has been regularly filling in the last several months. Just last month, HP moved to purchase Novadigm and Consera Software to beef up its automation capabilities.

In 2003, HP acquired Persist Technologies for information lifecycle management, Talking Blocks for Web services management and Baltimore Technologies' Select Access business for federated identity management.
