I want to set up a discussion forum with ads up either side and banners. Is this possible in vB or should i be looking at wraping something like joomla around a vB page visual basic, vb, active server pages (ASP),java, javscript,c, c++ ::

That's possible, you could simply edit the templates and add your advertisements there.
I've seen Google Ads used often, and I've also seen ads up both sides, though I've never used either myself.
