I am buying the starter kit and books to know about them and taking care of them. But how much do the actual rats cost? i am getting two.

I would actually recommend you do a google search of local rescues or breeders first. Sometimes they can be just as inexpensive, but you are either 1) buying from a reputable breeder which means LESS sickness and LESS vet bills and better quality rats or 2) you are rescuing rats that came from less than opportune situations. A lot of times rescues will have rats that come in pregnant and they need to adopt out babies.

The books and the employees are not always the most knowledgeable and Petco is notorious for sending home sick rats or rats that are pregnant. They get their rats usually from horrible mass breeding operations called rat mills.
Rat kits are notoriously not a big enough cage, wrong food, bad information, etc.
I would read a lot online, ask questions and then see if you can find some needy rescue rats in your area. People will often help you find them if you need the help :).
don't buy at petco; they are a ripoff...I once seen a simple kitten for sale ...250.00 dollars was their price...and on many given days, you can find a kitten free in the classifieds...
I guess it depends on where you live. In Chicago, Illinois, it's 10 dollars each.
But it also depends on size, too. If you're getting dwarf rats, then it's 5 dollars each.
