It was used to treat malaria.

I remember that there was an article a little while ago saying that chloroquine worked, too. And another related drug, ferroquine, which is in development, might work also. These are all quinine derivatives that are used as antimalarials. They are also used as anti-inflammatories, and some have promise in preventing the lung damage of ARDS.
