I'm an only child and I can't have a dog...i feel totally left out and am depressed and crying all the time..?

Published by: cfz 2009-01-08

  • What do i do -im 15 and im in advance in school, volunteer at animal shelters and all that kind of good things, the best behaved kid on the block yet everyone else is spoiled and im just so depressed!!!!!! ARGHGHGHGH1!!!!!!! >:(

Im just so damn lonely but my parents say i can have a virtual dog...wtf? WHAT SHOULD I DO!?!?!?

  • You'll get over it.

I am also an only child, and when I was living with my parents they wouldn't let me have a pet either. Yeah it sucks, but it is your parents decision.

Dogs can live 15 years, if you are advanced in school you will be off to college in 3 years anyway. I don't know of any freshman dorms that allow dogs. Plus you will be too busy with all your classes and new friends.

You also never mentioned having a job. If you have no income how would you help pay for the dog? Dogs are expensive and perhaps your parents don't want to or can't afford to have a dog right now.

I understand you are upset, but you can't make your parents get you a dog. There is no amount of rationalizing, whining, crying, or begging that will get your parents to change their minds. And frankly these things will annoy them and prove how immature you are, and probably not ready for a dog.

You say you are so smart and well behaved, but you sound very childish in this question. Join a club, hang out with friends. Then you won't be so lonely. I know that when I was in high school I was very busy and rarely lonely.

If you are really suffering from depression you should talk to your school counselor and get some help.

Wait till you grow up and move into your own place. That is what I did, and my dog means so much to me because I waited for him for a long time.

  • Why not try a hampster. though its not near a dog, its very energetic and can keep good company. plus u can tell it things u wouldnt tell anyone else and u know it wont tell anybody else! just a thought. good luck.

  • talk to someone u trust about ur depression, dont let the fact that everyone that is spoiled gets what they want and u dont depress u-- i know it doesnt sound fair but u will be an adult in a few yrs and on ur own so u can get a dog then , for now why dont u try gettting a smaller pet such as a gerbil, hamster, fish, a dwarf bunny, something u can keep in ur room but still take care of

  • The person W. who said you should grow up was not nice. That is a very bad answer.
A cat can be a good idea. Is there someone in the neighborhood whose dog you can walk? Ask around, don't get discouraged. It would be safer to get attached to that dog than one at the shelter.
If you are crying alot, this isn't good. Please talk to your guidance counselor at school. Teenagers can have depression problems and depression problems must be addressed.

I'm so sorry you can't have a dog. Do you have a grandparent who can help you out somehow?
Do you have a best friend at school you can talk to? How about a favorite teacher? Tell the teacher about your depression and how hard you try in school and volunteer at the shelter.
So sorry to hear about your situation. Wish I could help more. Crying a lot isn't good. Be persistent with the guidance counselor or favorite teacher. One of them will listen. Good luck.

  • you could get something low maintinence like a hermit crab, rat,or lizard. You just have to do a lot of research.

  • I feel exatcly the same sometimes, exept with other things. I think a lot of people are spoiled, and I'm the only person who is not allowed to have something everyone else has. I'm also around your age, and I take advanced classes in school. My parents make me really mad sometimes when I see no reason why I can't have something everyone else has.

Anyway, why do you think your parents don't let you have a dog? If it's because you live in apartments and can't have a dog, (I live in apartments, I always wanted a dog, but I understand why I can't have a dog), then there's almost nothing you could do about it. If it's because your parents say that a dog will have to be fed all the time and takes up to much responsibility, then try to find out how to prove to your parents that you will do a great job of taking care of a dog.

  • Dogs can be a huge responsibility. You're 15 and probably really responsible, but they do need a couple of walks a day rain, hail, sleet or snow. There's also the issue of money for food, vet care, and pet insurance - it'd probably use up about as much as your monthly pocket money/allowance, and can vary depending on the size or type of dog (big/small/pure breed/mix)

I'd like to know your parents reasons for saying no, but it might be that they know you'll be off to college, uni, or leave home within the next few years, and depending on your circumstances you would probably leave the dog with your folks.

If I was you I'd be real grown upo about it and ask if it could be discussed - they need to provide you with a good justification for saying no, and you have to provide a good justification for saying yes, This might sound a bit silly, but have you throught of asking the folks at the animal shelter to give you a reference which you could give to your parents to help demonstrate you are responsible?

You also need to show that you want a dog for the right reasons, being lonely might not be the right reason to them.....

I also reckon you need to speak to a counsellor at school - you need to get other interests that will help you develop friendships, and not feel so left out. Speak to your folks too. They'd hate to think you felt like that.

I hope you guys can work it out

  • you could try asking for a cat and then work your way up. that might work

  • Get a hamster, gerbil, or a rat?
They're great, i have one of each :D

  • Get over it. you want your house to smell like the place you volunteer at find a girlfriend she will take your mind off a pet

  • You've asked some version of this question here many many times. At 15, the constant complaining & bemoaning that you can't have a dog is probably getting on your parent's last nerve.

Try going about it a different way. Stop asking about it for at least a week or two. Keep up doing all your work, extra chores around the house, be helpful and good-natured. Then at some point after a few weeks, ask if you can sit down & talk to them both when they have time. Without complaining, ask if there is anything you could do to have them consider getting a dog. What would they like see happen, to assure them the dog would be no burden to them financially or care-wise? Ask them to outline any possible steps they want you to take as far as getting information, calling vets to get costs for vaccinations & exams. Think ahead to where you'll be 3 years from now--most colleges don't allow pets. That means they will be caring for the dog, and it may not be a responsibility they want to have being "empty nesters" for the first time in 18 years.

If the answer is still no, be mature and accept it. One sure sign of being mature is to be able to delay gratification. That means you don't have a major fit when you can't have what you want, exactly when you want it. Good luck.

  • Just get one and they can't do nothing

  • Rescue a couple of ferrets. They are so cute & fun. I rescued two males & they are so cute, I can't stop kissing 'em they are so cute. More fun than a barrel of monkeys.

  • All of these people answering are way too harsh! I wanted a dog when I was younger too, and I was in the same situation! My mom was always the mom who never wanted pets and it sucked! Eventually, though, I came home from school one day and she had surprised me with a puppy! The best thing you can do is prove that you're responsible (which it sounds like you are), sit down, and just talk with your parents after doing research on owning a dog (which I'm assuming you have already done). If they think it's too much work, tell them that some smaller dogs don't even need to go outside... you can use training pads for them to use the bathroom on and they'll be fine just using it like a cat uses a litterbox. Good luck!

  • Grow up is what you should do. Posting this question or similar ones several times here before shows you're immature.
Speak with your parents and your school counselor about your depression.

  • I am sorry, thats very sad for you to be lonely. I hope they give in and let you have a pet. You sound like a great kid and would hate to see you sad all the time
