This is a great little computer for people who need a cheap laptop or always want to be able to access the internet without carrying around a large laptop. Its pretty light. Just over one pound. You can configure it with 2,4 OR 8 gigs of Flash merory. It comes with a web cam and runs Xandros Linux, although you can install XP or another form of linux. It also has 512mg of RAM.

Are you talking about how the EEE's linux is set up? From what I've heard, its very user intuitive especially for newbies...

Ok, so the Eee runs a modified form of Xandros Linux. Your Desktop is basically just a set of tabs. (Work, Play, Internet, System.) Inside the work tab is the Open Office Suite and File Browser. Inside the Internet tab is Firefox, Network connections, iGoogle shortcut, Wikipedia Shortcut, Skype, and Pidgin. Inside the Play tab is a bunch of games. The OS works great and is specifically designed for the Eee. (Ie. Slimmed down a bit for faster boot times.) Although I plan to install Ubuntu.

So I saw one of these today... they sort of kinda look like one of those vtech laptops one would see at a toy store. No offense, but it really seems like a waste of money, and more a toy for older people or kids.
Care to elaborate a bit more on the operating system and what i can actually do. My sister is looking at getting a really portable laptop to travel with and she looked at the Eee, but i steered her away.
How is the Linux? Is it easy to operate? Is it like Dos?

All the people is confusing the Linux console with the Win CMD (which is a false DOS). Linux can be totally graphic (with the X window system), is easier than win, and of course... is much better.

Personally I'm getting the Eee PC 900 on EBay in may (directlly from Taiwan). With a little bit of Electrical knowledges you can weld in the Mobo a Flash memory (16GB or More), an HSDPA adapter, GPS, and a lot of stuff... You can install a touchable screen, you can overclock it... Its an awesome toy!

Loyx I don't think directory was being serious. It's a web development forum most of us run linux all the time (server stuff ect) I'm sure he was trying to pick fun at the little toy (plus there is a large screenshot at the top of the post).
Of course the dumbed down version of linux is easier than windows, its a very compact linux distro. good to see you think of it as a toy :), not that its a bad thing.

Man, you lucky bastard with your EEE! I saw a guy at MIT using one, so damn cool. Honestly, there's no reason why you wouldn't be able to use this laptop as a full-fledged "portable" laptop...obviously excluding the tiny keyboard, horrible speakers, etc.
You could even install XP on there and now it's a small laptop that runs 99% of programs out there.

but, apparently, word on the street is that they're upgrading the Eee line with touch displays that would only really increase the price tag by $10.

Heh, you could same the same of some of the stuff in OSX as well...as many OS's take cues from the "flashyness" of OSX, especially Vista. Anyway, I would argue against saying that all that flashy stuff in Linux slows you down, on the contrary I honestly think it preforms and functions even better than without them.
