Just soft modded my xbxox and succesfully put on XBMC. However I have been FTPing media over and it is not showing up under the main screen menu(movies, music, pictures) Is there a specific folder or drive Im supposed to place things in? I have to go into filemanager to access them. Also I am having trouble accessing the laptopfrom the xbox. When it says add source it doesnt find it. My laptop is running wireless through the lynksys router. What would be the laptops IP? The xbox is 102 what is the default wireless number? Im a complete noob to all of this and to this forum. I am solely using this as a media center to store all the movies I download so I can free up space on my laptop. I would like to be able to access the itunes library that is in my laptop so I can play music if i want. Any help is greatly appreciated.
so ill have to convert them to avi. And basically i need to either get a bigger hard drive for the xbox or my laptop or an external to hold all the media and just let the xbox access it over the network. still, how do i delete the sources i set up that dont work? The XBox hardware doesn't have the power required to play .mkv (720p/1080p).
Should I get an external HD or install one inside the box. Also, I was thinking 500gb or bigger, but have read that it could cause some problems. I'm leaning towards an external but I would like to have just one box for all my media. What problems with a large hd, if any, will I have with a hd of 500gb or more? Also, I tryed to hook up the component cables to a 480p designated input and it would not support it. Does XBMC support progressive at all?
ok damn i misunderstood. haha i finally figured it out. I had to enable the file sharing windows thing. I have a macbook so its been a little tougher to find the right info but i finally have and it is retrieving all the info from my itunes library now. f'n sweet man. ok so how do i delete sources that i set up wrong? Can i ftp in and do it that way? I wanna go back and erase the stuff i had previously put on. This is definately cool. I feel like a geek wasting half my friday night messin with my old xbox. If I wasnt such a noob mybe it would have been easier. Anyway thanks for the help and keep it comin please. Knowledge is power and when it comes to xbmc i cant punch my way out of a wet paper bag. Im goin to the bar to get a drink after this
yeah i realized after i got xbmc on there just how small the hd was. thanks for the info. I ve read some of it and looks like Im going to be adding a bigger hd in the near future. Also i have the latest version of itunes so i guess that it why that wasnt working. I looked up dhcp and my router but still cant figure out what number it should be, i tryed 103,4,5,6. Maybe Ill just hard wire the laptop for a quick min and do it that way. Also i think in the userdata folder you place the things in their corresponding folders to make them show up on the main screen, could be wrong on that. Also while I was playing around I got to a place that allowed me to create a new folder on the c drive. Not sure if this might help me but ill play some more. I just have seen all these screen shots that shows a folder with all the movies and tv shows with their respective thumbnails and such. I just want mine to look like that. Im the type that plays with things before reading directions, but ill try to read some more. Agan, any and all help is greatly appreciated. IRSeeK.com - Search result page. You seem to have a lot of misconceptions about how things are supposed to work, so I'm going to start off by asking you to look through this: http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=XBMC_Online_Manual
Specifically, you want to look at Adding Media Sources & Sharing Media from Your PC.
Regarding your questions about your XBOX and Laptop's IP... your router uses something called "DHCP" to assign IPs to whatever is connected to it. Google for DHCP or your specific router's name will yield tons of useful results.
And finally I'd like to mention that your xbox's harddrive is only 8gb, and some of that is already being taken by XBMC & the standard microsoft dashboard, so you're really only going to be able to save a tiny bit of room on the laptop...
hungover pretty bad and im having trouble playing .mkv files. the movie starts then the box locks up. Any suggestions? Also how do i add thumbnails to my movies that dont have them?
If there's ever something you wish you could do in XBMC, it's probably in the context menu. White button on xbox controller or Title on the remote.
I have a thomson router that supports external usb hdd (fat32 only) and i access all my media files from the XBox using smb.
Works very nice even with high bitrate .mpg (720p).
yeah i have three routers set up. 2 linksys wrt54g and a d-link. all are wireless but i figure i can just get an external hd and hard wire to one of the routers and ill set my downloads to go onto that and set up the xbox to access it. sounds like it should work but things always sound simple when they are just plans.
No, i think you still mis-understand.
You dont put your media into a pre-defined folder, you put it anywhere you like (local hdd, lan, internet, nas...etc) and use the "add source" option to point to where you have your videos/music/pictures. This way you have total control as to how you organise your media.
Also to find the ip add of your wireless laptop, goto control panel/network connections, right click the wireless connection and select settings, and finally click support. If your router is assigning IP's via DHCP, this may well change at some point (like when you reboot the laptop).
Remember to share files from the laptop you need to setup filesharing on the laptop.
Once you have added sources you should be able to browse to your media, if you get a "lock preferances error" you need to either, enable guest account on laptop or create a new user (more secure, password) on the laptop and enter the user/pass in XBMC (settings/network/SMB)
Shorty
Yes, .avi will run fine.
Clean library (in settings/video) or delete them manually from the library (black or white gamepad button, don't remember wich).
The best option is to have the media in a network disc (attach to a PC/NAS/Router) and access them through the XBox/XBMC.
