Published by: webmaster 2009-01-08

  • Nikon D700::
And of all Nikons recent models, the D700 could be the one that scares Canon, Meanwhile, Nikon had also just released the D90, a mid-level professional

Didn't want this piece of news to get lost in that Rumors thread...

    DP Review - Hands-On Preview Nikon D700 (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0807/08070103nikond700previewed.asp)

  • all i know is that i'm going to try with all my power to get my grubby little hands on one of them D700's, gotta start savin'!

  • Nikon has historically come out with a fast pro body for journalists and then one that has higher resolution for the other pros.

It's not really an upgrade but a different model on the same chassis if you will.

That makes sense. A good competitive strategy too.

  • This Christmas would be a quick upgrade. What features do people still need that the D3 doesn't provide?

They already let part of the cat out of the bag... the D3X is going to be a touch over 24MP, lightly more improved high ISO noise control, probably a touch slower on the FPS front and traditionally, the "x" is about $1000 more.

The latest firmware showed the future 24+ MP capabilities. Seems Nikon is letting more than a few mistakes slip out lately? ;)

For me, the next camera *is* going to be the D3 (D4?), not the D700 nor the D3X.

  • This move makes sense. The 5D didn't really have any competitors. I just hope Canon can make something that can tear this to shreds :)

  • The D3 will probably still have it's market.

PJs and sports shooters might consider the twin CF configuration to be worth the extra money by it's self.

Now on to the D3X. By Christmas or late next winter?

  • $2999.99 does not sound like a bad deal.

  • Good, now maybe I can snag a used d300 off ebay for $1000!

  • Remember that breakthrough in lens tech I was just on about?

    Check this out..

    15fps @ 25 megapixels :)

  • Nikon's press release....

  • Competition between manufacturers is good for consumers.

Now where is that 5DmkII? CANON?

exactly! Canon had no reason to release a 5DmkII since there was simply no competition. Now finally the wheel might be turning again ... looking forward to the future :)

  • I hope so too because the current 5D is looking like a 2000 model Holden. A beast in it's day but not something anyone would want to try and brag about now. Actually I should go back to photocontinental and rub the D700 in the face of the guy who claimed that Nikon was financially and intellectually incapable of a) producing their own sensor, and b) making it full frame. LOL Nikon is on top today, the cycle continues. Wonder what will get released tomorrow :)

/EDIT: As a matter of interest I wonder if anyone will honestly consider a D3 now...

  • I am renting a Canon 1Ds Mk III this weekend, but I canNOT wait for the 5D replacement. This Nikon has what I always liked about the 5D - full-frame sensor in a (relatively) small body.

  • Nikon moving to CF? :)

Well, last time around, Canon came out with the 40D and 1dsMKIII, and Nikon did some buttwhoopin with the introduction of the D300 and D3. This time, maybe it'll be the other way around.

  • Dang. If only SOMEONE had warned us that Nikon was going to be releasing this "D700." Surely someone heard about it in the rumor mill, yet NO ONE said anything...

    *shrugs*

  • The question on my mind right now is who is going to come up with the next breakthrough on lens technology?

And then it's what is the new tech going to be? Even more exotic glass? Bigger elements? Multiple light channels? Continuous scan MI sampling?

    Should be fun!!!

  • 8fps more like. :)

  • $3000, with all the bells and whistles, based on generations of previous models, and it still doesn't have a 100% viewfinder.

THAT should be the next evolution in camera design.

  • I like it... but... for my purposes, the 1.5 crop factor of a D300 is actually a lot better since most everything I shoot is telephoto...

If I were doing weddings, however, I would order one of these the second Adorama listed it on their website (they are first come, first served).

  • The ball is in your court now Canon. This D700 seems so close to the D3 now though. I would've given it 5fps max even with the battery grip to not encroach on the D3.

  • yep. I like that the D3/D700 can go to 25,600 ISO. If the newer Canon has decent results (comparable to 40D at 3200 which is usable for my situations) at at least 12,800 ISO, then I'll certainly go for one.

  • A very good move from Nikon, now I'm waiting for Canon's 5Dish answer.

  • Damn....I just got the D300 a few short months ago....

The price seems reasonable, but can't justify by any strecth of my imagination... But damn....

In case nobody went deeper in that link from Iron Flatline, Nikon is introducing an SB-900 flash at the EOM. Hmmm.....
