Only top of site loads when outpost is running

Published by: wktd 2009-01-08

  • Hi everyone, I just updated to outpost 2 and have a very strange problem.

When I try to go to my favourite site only the top of the pages load, and I have to press Stop to get the whole page.

I have the default rulesets applied, and have removed all plug-ins except Attack detection and E-mail attachment blocker, and I am in Rules mode.

Even if I put outpost in Disable-mode, the pages won't load fully. I have to Exit and shutdown outpost.

Does anyone else get that behaviour and what on earth could case it? I get it on 2 different computers.

(Using IE 6 and Windows 2000).

PS. And I have had some other strange problems about my browser locking itself up every now and then, then unlocking after 15-60 seconds, that started after I installed outpost, but I have to investigate that a bit more before I put the blame.

Link removed due to mature content. Also due to some great detective work by Lena her problem is resolved.

  • Thanks Root for your assistance - I tried to clean out my cachefiles and cookies etc. but it didn't help.

Then I tried with Mozilla 1.1 - and the pages load, but rather slow. As soon as I shut down Outpost, the pages in Mozilla from that site load lots faster

I will try and check the logfiles if I can come up with something...

  • Okay, I have javascript enabled, and nothing shows up in the log files (attack detection, blocked, content). The only entries are under Allowed. I have stopped and removed all plug-ins, also attack detection to test, but no improvement.

What a mystery - and it really happens on my friend's computer too, she also just installed Outpost 2 trial. Internet Explorer just tries to load the page forever and nothing but the logo gets loaded until you press Stop (after that the front page obviously gets cached because it then loads, but no other page works).

  • Lena,

Please remember we have many members of this forum under the age of 18 and therefore have a responsibility to ensure that they are not being directed to inappropriate content. Keep in mind it is not what you or I deem inappropriate it is what their parent and/or gaurdian finds objectionable. In the future if there is any doubt about the content of a link please PM a moderator with the link (we are all over the age of 18) and appropriate warning about the sites content. We can then review it and decide if it is OK to be posted publicly or not. I am including the specific rule for your review.

  • Well, I added a warning, just for you... However, this is a forum for support and troubleshooting Outpost, so how about sticking to the topic...

  • It's a Holiday weekend and lots of people are gone.
Give somebody a chance to reply tomorrow or next day.
I use Opera, so I am unfamiliar with IE.

  • I have the same problem. I tried to stop Active Content Filtering but it does not help even with rebooting. Only "Exit and Shutdown Outpost" helps. W2K Pro SP3, IE6 SP1.

  • Man. that is one intrusive site. Probably a combination of ative content (outpost) and IE security settings. I could only get completely in to it by using Anonymizer which is a proxy which took local settings out of the picture. I would imagine that if you loosen all your IE security settings and allow all active content in Outpost (which I was not willing to do - hence anonymizer), you would get in without any trouble.

  • Same problem here with IE6. Probably browser-related. Tried a few things, but nothing worked. Looks to me that the plugins have nothing to do with it. OP surely does, but I'm uncertain what it could be.

  • Thanks hayc59 :D Yes, this really looks like a great forum, and I have always been a big fan of Outpost, all the other firewalls are just too intrusive or cumbersome to use :)
And it's a good thing that ver. 2 is finally out, even though it seem to have a few quirks and bugs, which is understandable for a new release.

Today, I have had no other problems with Outpost than this, though!

  • I can load the page fine, so lets see if we can figure this out.
First I suspect a cacheing problem.
I would enable all the plugins, and delete all the entries in the Outpost DNS cache. I would also delete the cache files in IE - tools, internet options, temporary internet files and push delete files.
You might also want to add baffinbooks.com to your list of sites under active content and allow JS, Cookies, and java applets.
When you try to go there again, if you still have problems, check all the logs, like blocked, attack detection, active content, etc.

  • I've the same problem with Outpost Pro v2. With v1 I hadn't this problem. I doesn't depend on the browser. Same effect with Opera 7.10 (my standard-browser) and IE 6.0. With no Firewall the pages load very fast. If there is no solution I go back to Outpost Pro 1.0.
    Regards
    Housi :(

  • You could have warned that it's a website for homosexuals!

No, I've got nothing against homosexuals per se; but I don't appreciate being unwittingly directed to a 'site for such persons.

What if a child clicks onto that link? There's quite a lot of adult material on there!! :-/

Well, it wasn't an intrusive website for me; I use 'The Proxomitron'! Now, where's that 'blockfile'...

  • I feel that my comments are pertinent to this thread.
I don't wish to cause trouble, I just ask that you (or anyone else) be a little more responsible in the future.

Thanks for the warning message. :)

  • i am running windows98se and internet explorer 6.0=would not load except for top ad.
tried my Opera and loaded in a hot second!!
    very strange??
and Lena welcome to the greatest forum around!!
and by the way nice site...:D :D

  • Good to see that I have not totally messed up my computer, and that others are having the same behaviour with IE 6 + Outpost 2 !

I really don't think it is a plug-in issue, because I have all plug-ins turned off.

I don't think that is an intrusive site, it has no ads or "active content" at all from what I have seen, and Outpost version 1 was not afraid to show me that site :D And - as we have seen it works with Mozilla/Opera.

    A weird Outpost bug ?

  • I've found the cause to Baffinbooks not loading, see my post in this thread: http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7431&perpage=15&pagenumber=2
Seems like an Outpost 2 bug, and has to do with the web page html-syntax.
