Scouting the New York Giants - Cleveland Browns football NFL News :: Youve had two weeks (+ 1 day) and one preseason game film to prepare for the Giants. the divisional round of the play-offsand this year, the Giants are http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2008/10/tony_grossis_scouting_report_n.htmlHOME | I've been able to see all four games of the Division One Play-Offs (although I had to leave at halftime of the first Ipswich/West Ham game) and have been reasonably impressed. It's certainly been entertaining football, with Crystal Palace/Sunderland ending in wild fashion and West Ham/Ipswich going down to the wire, as well. I'm looking forward to the final.
I think we've got a little way to go before we're up to that level, but depending on the money that comes into the club, who knows?
Any of you have preferences as to which of the two London clubs goes to the Premiership and which we'll be facing next season? Whichever remains in Division One will be a match I'll hope to go over for.
As for which Division Two team will join us in the First, the first-leg results were:
Hartlepool 1-1 Bristol City
Swindon 0-1 Brighton
Bristol City is hosting Hartlepool right now and it's 0-0 at half-time. Brighton hosts Swindon tomorrow.
Bristol City pulls it out of the fire. Goal in the 2nd minute of injury time. Bristol City 2-1 Hartlepool with just the remainder of injury time left.
Congats to Crystal Palace for getting promoted to the Premier League with their win over West Ham yesterday.
I got to see the match and it was both entertaining and tense. Where I watched the match (the Lucky Bar in DC) the Eagles outnumbered the Hammers, although I think more Hammers fans went to Summers in Arlington, VA. Part of me wanted West Ham to win in order to get the bigger club out of the first division (thus increasing QPR's chances) and part of me wanted the smaller club to win (thus giving hope to clubs like QPR). Anyway, it was great to watch. www.cs.toronto.edu/~andria/Text_files/9798_ECAC_finals.txt:: Division I ECAC Championship 03/07/98 Harvard 1 at New Hampshire 2 NC ot 7: These are two strong teams and I expected to see some chippy play and a fair http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~andria/Text_files/9798_ECAC_finals.txtHOME |
As fun as it was to be in Cardiff last year for the Division Two play-off final, I sure would love to be there next year or at Wembley in '06 fighting for a place in the Premiership.
Leeds, West Ham, Sunderland, Leicester, Wolves, Ipswich, Coventry, Forest, Derby, Sheffield United, Wigan, Preston, Millwall, Watford, et al. Man, Division One is going to be one heck of a challenge.
Also, congrats to Brighton on defeating Bristol City in the Division Two play-off final today. The only score of the match was a Leon Knight PK and it sounds like nearly as tense an affair as we had last year. I got to see Brighton twice this year (at home in D2 and in LDV Vans Trophy play) and now may get to see Shittu, Carlisle, Rose, etc. shut down little Mr. Knight again next season!
Both games go to penalties.
Brighton-Swindon
Both make -- 1-1 after round 1. Both make -- 2-2 after round 2. Swindon's third was saved -- 3-2 Brighton after round 3. Both make -- 4-3 Brighton after round 4. Swindon misses in round 5, so Brighton is through 4-3.
Wow, so Brighton scores in extra-time injury-time and are now through to Cardiff.
Just behind that one...
Mansfield-Northampton
Both make -- 1-1 after round 1. Both make -- 2-2 after round 2. Both make -- 3-3 after round 3. Former Ranger Eric Sabin had his saved for Northampton in round 4; Mansfield scored -- 4-3 Mansfield after round 4. Northampton makes in round 5, but so does Mansfield. Gotta feel sorry for Eric Sabin. Mansfield it through to Cardiff.
So, the play-off finals are:
Division Three -- Mansfield Town v. Huddersfield Town
Division Two -- Bristol City v. Brighton & Hove Albion
Division One -- Crystal Palace v. West Ham United
Too bad we'll only get one of those games on TV here in the States.
D2 semi is into the second 15 of extra time now. Still Brighton 0-2 Swindon.
D3 is just a few minutes behind, it seems, and there's been no score in extra time.
QPR-fan Sam Parkin scores for Swindon in the 81st minute. It's now in the 83rd. Swindon is up 1-0 in this one and the series is now even at 1-1.
Still 0-0 in the 67th minute. Swindon has 7 shots, 6 on goal, to Brighton's 1 shot, 0 on goal, but unless they can break through with one soon, it'll be Brighton heading to Cardiff.
0-0 at the half and still 0-0 in the 52nd minute now. Brighton is less than 40 minutes away from Cardiff.
What a wild era to be a Brighton fan:
00/01 -- Champions of 3rd Division.
01/02 -- Champions of 2nd Division.
02/03 -- Relegated from the 1st Division.
03/04 -- 2nd Division Play-offs.
Before that, they were relegated from Division 2 in 95/96, finished second from bottom (one away from relegation to Conference) in Division 3 in both 96/97 and 97/98, then two seasons of mid-table blah in the 3rd, before beginning their four-year wild ride through the divisions.
Brighton 0-0 Swindon
27th minute; no cards; Swindon has had two shots on goal, Brighton none.
Brighton holds a 1-0 lead after the first leg and is hosting the second.
All of the play-offs have been wild this year. In D3, Mansfield went to Northampton in the first leg and won 2-0. Northampton had overturned it away at Mansfield, going up 3-0, but now Mansfield has pulled one back, so that series is 3-3 late in game two.
In D2, it's still Brighton 0-0 Swindon in the 72nd minute.
Could Brizzle be on the way out? It's Bristol City 0-1 Hartlepool after a 63rd minute goal by Pools. 72nd minute now.
Huge surprise with the Monkey Hangers winning in Bristol - but City always seem to choke in May.
Palace-Sunderland match was terrific the other night. Watched at the pub with 8 very excited Eagles supporters.
Wow -- Bristol City just equalized in the 88th minute. Could be heading to extra time in this one.
Could Brizzle be on the way out? It's Bristol City 0-1 Hartlepool after a 63rd minute goal by Pools. 72nd minute now.
part of me wanted the smaller club to win (thus giving hope to clubs like QPR).
Oooh, hope Palace fans didn't see that "smaller" bit. They feel they're back to where they belong. Amazing run from Christmas to yesterday orchistrated by Iain Dowie - fantastic manager.
Palace fans especially happy to be out of Division One today, with Brighton going up. They absolutely despise the Albion (aka "Seaweed")
Oooh, hope Palace fans didn't see that "smaller" bit. They feel they're back to where they belong. Heck, as a fan of a team that averages under 20K, I hope clubs like that can belong in the Premiership! I didn't mean "smaller" as in small, just as in "smaller" fanbase between the two teams.
West Ham averages around double what Palace does, according to footballgroundguide.co.uk. West Ham was in the Premiership in those years and Palace in D1, but I thought West Ham still drew pretty big crowds this year.
Of course, West Ham probably now has larger debts, too, so who is to say who is "smaller"? ;)
Both Brighton-Swindon and Mansfield-Northampton are now into extra time.
Swindon's Fallon just scored in the 97th minute. Today's score so far, Brighton 0-2 Swindon. Series so far Brighton 1-2 Swindon. Still a way to go in extra time, though.
Bristol City had already used all their subs. Hartlepool just brought their third one on in the 89th minute. Into injury time at 1-1.
It's final. Down a goal until the 88th minute, Bristol City is going to Cardiff.
Holy cow. In the first minute of injury time in the second period of extra time, Brighton's Adam Virgo scores. It's now Brighton 1-2 Swindon. If this score holds up for the rest of injury time, it's on to penalties.
Still no score in the D3 extra time -- almost done there too.
