I have the 2002 totals for all people that did some kind of
paddelsports but not just kayak - if you have kayak in the US that
will be fine for 2002 exercise causes anger::

I actually found more recent statistics for kayak participation in the
US from the Nationwide Survey on Recreation and the Environment
(NSRE). Here are the figures:
Year : Number of People Who Do kayaking in the US
2004 : 15 million
