I have a Dell Laptop. Wk2 with latest SP, Norton AV 2002, Wireless Network via D-Link DI-713P Router/Access, DSL Modem.

I uninstalled Outpost Pro and reinstalled w/Norton AV turned off. Still I cannot log on as a user other than Administrator and access the Internet. I have searched the Site and have not found a solution. I have placed OUTPOST.EXE in the ALL USER STARTUP FOLDER. I can see the Standard Outpost icon in the Tray when logged on as a different user but cannot open to a window, even tho I have granted the Rights and Privileges. Using Control Panel, adding the user to the Administrator Group will allow me to access the Internet. Shutting down Outpost will also allow any user to access the Internet. I would prefer to have all users benefit from the safeguards Outpost offers. Can I get there from here?

I had previously been using Norton Personal Firewall, accessible to all users. All users had no problem accessing the Internet. Please, please, give me a hint. I am currently in the process of recommending an easy to use, reliable Firewall to my friends and, except for the fact that one can only access the Internet if they Logon as the Administrator, the features in Outpost surpass any other Firewall I have evaluated.:)

  • Welcome to the forums Yukon,

Aside from the suggestions I made to your PMs (checking NTFS permissions, Outpost uninstall/reinstall), do you receive any Outpost messages about Fast User Switching? (yes, this should only apply to XP, but I have encountered it on Win2k). Does this problem persist if you restart your computer and login with a non-Administrator user? (I am guessing here that you log in first as Admin, then logout and back in as another user). Does Outpost show any entries in its Blocked log? Does changing Outpost to Allow Most or Disable mode allow other users Internet access? (if it does, then this suggests a rules setup issue). Finally, is all Internet access (web, email, etc) blocked? (try opening a Command Prompt box and typing ping www.bbc.co.uk and seeing if you get a response back).

  • Have applied all the suggestions including completely uninstalling Outpost Pro, Downloading the most recent Build, to no avail. Still, complete access when logged on as Admin, no access when logged on as User. While logged on as User I exit Outpost and have complete access to Internet thru IE Explore. When I launch Outpost again access to Internet is halted. When I asign a user to Power Users, Outpost works fine. I cannot include Users in Power Users Group because that will compromise security to key system files. Still at a loss as to how to exploit the benefits of Outpost for Multiple Users sharing a common computer. Again, had no problems with Norton Firewall, just doesn't have some of the same beneficial features as provide by Outpost.

Thanks for guidance on how to Post on Forum. Regarding your response to my Post:

    Granted permissions to non-admin user

    Have uninstalled/reinstalled several times

    No Fast User Switching notification

    Problem does persist after restart

Log shows no activity while logged on as User

Outpost Disabled does allow User to access Internet

Was able to Ping www.bbc.co.uk when logged on as User, but still no IE Explorer or mailI would ask you to confirm if changing to Allow Most policy makes any difference. Also, please check your Event Log (accessible via Control Panel/Administrative Tools) for any Outpost-related messages. Try access with an account which is a member of the Power Users group.

You mention that you are using a Wireless Access Point - is your laptop Internet access via a wireless PC-Card, built-in wireless or a physical connection? (USB or Ethernet) If possible, try using another means to access the Internet (e.g. dial-up modem) to see if the problem applies there also.

Since this would appear to be a permissions issue, please also check that the Users group has access to the following options under Local Security Settings/User Rights Assignment (these are the settings on my system):

Access this computer from the network
    Bypass traverse checking
    Log on locally
    Remove computer from docking station
    Shut down the system

  • I started out with trying Outpost and have since purchased it thinking that once I got the Key, anyone logged on to my notebook would be able to access the Internet. So far none of the suggestions offered to enable W2K Users other than the Admin to access the Internet have proven useful. I have spent two weeks researching all Help and Support Sites and have not found any reference to Users other than the Admin and Internet Access. I have Emailed Agnitum 5 times over the last 8 days and have not received any answer to date. I feel that Outpost is a great product but it is useless if access to the Internet is only available to the Admin. If anyone knows how to permit any User logged on, other than the Admin, to access the Internet, I would really appreciate your sharing that information.

  • You did report that Power Users were able to access the Internet - so the only suggestion I can make would be to check the differences in permissions between the User and Power User group and grant the User group the extra permissions until access is granted. I cannot help further with this, since I use Power User exclusively and therefore cannot replicate your system setup (I have changed permissions extensively myself so creating a User and experimenting would not give the same results).

  • Build 238/290 which is now available may help with this issue - see the New Version build 238/290 (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7954) thread for more details.
