Outpost School?
Published by: wktd 2009-01-07

  • I really loved this program after switching over from BID about a year ago, but recently when I upgraded to Version 2 I've been fighting it day and night.
One thing, I find many web sites that I cannot use the links unless I shut down Outpost completely and open a new browser window. (The links work in Netscape 4.7 either way, but not in IE6 or Mozilla) Apparently they are some sort of Java Script. (All worked fine w/ version 1.1)

I have gone into OPTIONS PLUG INS and disabled or set to ALERT or PROMPT all but that still doesn't work.

Example: http://www.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/dasp/ua_info.asp?&_lang=EN&country=US and click on the FAQ link. I can't view it with Outpost Pro running unless I use Netscape.

I'm sure this program is great for blocking all types of evil things, but tweaking it to perfection is a full time job if you want real security. Seems like you have to enable Java and cookies to get anything to work on a web page. And, is it Java, Java Scripting, Active X controls... Scripting or what that lurks to destroy us? Should we just set them all to REPORT?

    Thanks
    Tim

  • Enabling pop ups seemed to do the trick. Of course now I have to run another Pop Up Stopper, which occasionally... I see a pop up that looks like a DOS screen and says something about updating something. Anyway, when I add it to my pop up stopper (POW) I can no longer open any browser... it closes them all, until I remove that particular pop up from the stop list.

  • timbuk2,

Whenever you suspect that Active Content may be blocked causing you not to be able to view some web content, first verify what is blocked in the Active Content logs. After you have verified that Active Content was blocked, just add that domain to the exception list and enable the necessary Active Content.

Then, you can clear your history, cookies, and cache and the page should reload. Alternatively, you can press and hold the Control key (Ctrl) and use your mouse to click on the browser Refresh button. Using either method SHOULD force the browser to reload the entire page which SHOULD include the blocked Active Content.

I hope that helps in your case.

    Have a good day. :)

  • it works for me, using both IE6 and Mozilla Firebird.

  • i also just tried it and failed. but it bounced me to this
fact:Are you using a browser that doesn't support JavaScript?
If your browser does not support JavaScript, you can upgrade to a newer browser, such as Microsoft® Internet Explorer 6 or Netscape 6.

    Have you disabled JavaScript?
If you have disabled JavaScript, you must re-enable JavaScript to sign in. To enable JavaScript:

    Using Internet Explorer 6
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    Click the Security tab.
    Click Custom Level.
Scroll to Scripting. Under Active scripting, click Enable.
    Click OK twice.

    Using Netscape 6
On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
    Click Advanced.
Select the Enable JavaScript for Navigator check box.
    Click OK.

    Using another browser
To sign in to Passport, you must use a browser that supports JavaScript. For detailed instructions about how to enable JavaScript, see Help in your browser.

then i went back to plug-ins/active content and allowed
javascript for that web site and then worked great!!:D

  • timbuk2...its probably because the active content plugin is blocking hotmail.msn.com pop up.
Add that address in active content web pages and allow pop ups and you should be able to view tthe FAQs at that site

  • timbuk2,

You don't have to enable "Popups" in Active Content. That enables a "global" setting for everything. Simply right click on "Active Content" and select "Properties. When the dialog box opens, click on the "Add" button at the bottom. Then just type in the URL for the page you want to add. (HINT: use the URL for the website that was blocked that appears in the Active Content Log.) The column on the right will then display all the various items that you can either enable (allow) or disable (disallow) for that page ONLY.

That way you can still have Popups or any of the Active Content items disabled but allow them for that specific website. :D
