Outpost will not load for different user

Published by: wktd 2009-01-07
  • Help.....
    Recently installed Outpost pro 2.1 (running windows xp pro). After logging off and another user logs on, Outpost will not load at the startup for the current user (normal startup load selected within Outpost). Each time a different user logs on, I have to manually load the application to run it. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Trivman

  • are you running op as a service (normal default for xp), or just from the startup group (which normally just runs the gui)?

    what security group do the other users belong to?

    is the startup link in the 'all users' startup folder or just in yours? (move it to the all users if desired)

    failing that, they might not have rights to run the gui which can be used to modify settings. the outpost service should still be running & protecting in the background. if you add them to power users, or administrators groups (if you trust them) it may run & you can always set a config password to keep the settings from being accidentally adjusted.

  • Thanks for your response......
    The startup link is indeed in the allusers startup folder. As to you first question, I'm not clear on the difference between op running as a service or just from the startup group. When I installed op, I don't recall there being an option (?) Likewise, can you clarify what you mean by security group? There are only two users on this computer, both of whom have full adminstrator rights. Are there op user settings that I have overlooked? Another piece of info.....when I power down and restart the computer, whoever logs on initially will have op load, then if that person logs off and the other logs on, op doesn't load (it's not in the system tray, although the task manager says its running.) However, if I attempt to run an application accessing the internet that op has not seen before, it doesn't alert me, although I think it should if it is still running in the background.

    Thanks again,

  • Thanks Kronckew...........I will play with these suggestions :ty:

  • I have worked this problem around a different way. I gave every "user-account" an additional membership in the adminstrator group. Booted the user-account(-s) once and with that the automatic servicemode of outpost. Launched the Outpost GUI and toggled the program on and of once to be shure that it realy loads into memory automaticaly and manualy.

    I have had to to do this on every accounts.

    Then under the adminstrator account I have reseted the user-account to be members only in the user-account family. This has solved the issue for me.

    However: -I'm not shure what the user account has herited from the administrator account.

  • outpost installs on win2k and winxp as a core service, and 'logs in' as the local system account so it can start at a lower level, earlier that is, than is possible with windows 9x where it installs in the startup folder & thus does not protect until the user logs on.
    if you shut down & exit outpost via the taskbar icon, it shuts down the core service as well as the gui app. if you re-run the executeable, it starts up as if it were on win9x & does NOT restart the core service.

    i'll asume you are using winxp or 2k:
    ===========================
    the standard user security groups are administrator, power user, guest, network configuration operator, backup operator, replicator, users, debugger users and help services - these can be access thru control panel - admin tools - computer management -system tools - local users and groups. - if they're already admins this is not the problem tho as local admins by definition are members of all local groups...(if you use the xp control panel -user account thingy it only lets you select administrator or limited....)

    are you using the quick user change option - this may need changing.

    also, the startup group item should run the gui via

    "c:program filesagnitumoutpost firewalloutpost.exe" -waitservice

    i've got a little batch file i use to get things going again in similar circumstances when i'm messing around with settings & need to reload to activate changes:

    @echo off
    @net stop outpostfirewall
    @net start outpostfirewall
    @"c:program filesagnitumoutpost firewalloutpost.exe" -waitservice
    @exit

    for those readers not familiar with batch files, create a new text item, copy the 4 lines with @ in front to it, save it as op_restart.bat in your windows (or winnt) directory, create a desktop shortcut (browse to find the OP_restart.bat). i occasionally get a error saying it could not stop the service, even tho it does. you could always modify the stop/start lines to redirect the output messages to nul (nul is a 'nothing' device) if you don't want to see them.

    @net stop outpostfirewall > nul
    @net start outpostfirewall > nul

    anyway, probably more than you wanted, but good luck, hope one of the hints helps....
