I have a Comstar Pioneer dvd burner (model #: DVR-S111B). I've had it for about 2 years now, and it's been working PERFECTLY, burning cds and dvds. Up until yesterday, it keeps freezing during the burning process!! It only freezes when burning dvds. It always stops on 30%, I already tried using different burning software and they all freeze at 30%! I have not switched brands of dvds or anything like that.

My first guess is that something is interfering with disk access, like spyware, anti-virus, or any other running software. CDs and DVDs are accessed (and speed increases) from center to outer.
1: test the burner in a different PC, or, 1: antivirus scan, close all unneeded software. 2: slower burning speed. 3: switch brands, chemicals in blank media can differ. 4: update DVD-ROM firmware. 5: update motherboard drivers 6: Update PC bios. DVD burner issues | Ask Metafilter::
It is an old Gateway DVD rom, that I got with the system in 1999, and I don't believe it's a Pioneer. So I suspect is is not brand or model specific problem

It sounds like the drivers for your burner have either fallen off or corrupted themselves, which happens frequently.
Go into your Device Manager and update the drivers for that device. You can access your Device Manager by going through Start/Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/System/Hardware Devices/ and select the Device Manager.
Find your burner in the list of devices, it will be under drives, and right click on it, select "update driver."
If it comes back telling you that it couldn't find any drivers more current, then you can use the Windows Update feature to find drivers instead.
Run Windows Update, instead of allowing it to do an "Express" update, select "Custom" and wait for it to scan.
On the left you should see that you have optional hardware and software updates available. The auto-update feature only does critical updates, you are expected to go get the optional ones yourself.
All the optional ones listed are specific for your system, you should do a custom scan once a month to make sure all your hardware and software is up to date.
If there are hardware updates available then they likely include the drivers for your burner, go ahead and do all the updates to your system, then restart your system and see if the burner is working properly.
If it STILL isn't working properly then input the exact name of the burner into a Google search to find the manufacturer's website, then download the drivers directly from there.
