WARSAW, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Poland's veterinary service has culled 4,200 turkeys following an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu on two poultry farms northwest of Warsaw, officials said on Sunday.
"The turkeys were gassed on Saturday night and the destruction of their carcasses is due to end on Sunday," PAP news agency reported district crisis-management chief Hilary Januszcyzk as saying.
He added that no new cases had been detected so far.
Two turkey farms in the Plock area, some 80 km (50 miles) northwest of Warsaw, were cordoned off after the outbreak was discovered and routine precautions were carried out.
Poland's chief veterinary officer said Lithuania had not banned Polish poultry imports.
"I was told by the head of Lithuania's Food and Veterinary Service, Kazimieras Lukauskas, that no such ban had been introduced," Ewa Lech told PAP news agency.
"They are waiting for a decision from the European Commission and will abide by the principles accepted in the EU."
Earlier, Polish Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki expressed surprise at reports that Lithuania had banned poultry imports from Poland following Saturday's outbreak.
Poland and Lithuania have been EU members since May 2004.
Sawicki said the poultry-farm owners whose stocks had been destroyed would be compensated at current retail prices.
Migrating ducks, geese or swans most likely brought the bird flu virus to Poland, officials have said. Poland's previous bird flu outbreak was in wild swans in the northern city of Torun in 2006.

There are plans to cull 4,000 birds. The cases were found at farms around the village of Brudzen near the city of Plock, Poland's chief veterinary officer Ewa Lech said on television.
Lech said the virus was most likely brought to Poland by migrating ducks, geese or swans and an area within a 3-km radius of the outbreak had been cordoned off.
"Areas of contamination and danger have been marked off," said Plock crisis management official Hilary Januszczyk. "The area is being constantly monitored by veterinary officials and the police."
The virus has caused more than 200 deaths in humans globally since 2003, according to World Heath Organization data.
Most people who have caught bird flu have had direct or indirect contact with infected fowl but experts fear the constantly mutating virus could change into a form easily transmitted from person to person.
Poland's efforts to contain the spread of the virus won the approval of the European Commission.
"The Polish authorities notified us in the middle of the night about a strong suspicion of bird flu," European Commission spokeswoman Barbara Helfferich told Reuters.
"We have been in contact with them since then, they are now taking the appropriate measures."
Bird flu was discovered in Poland in early 2006, in wild swans, near the city of Torun.
"There is no cause for alarm," Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on television. "I am in touch with the interior and health ministers as well as veterinary officials in charge. This is not the kind of threat we had several years ago."

WARSAW, Poland: Two turkeys at a poultry farm in central Poland have tested positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu, authorities said Saturday. It is the country's first reported case of the deadly virus in domestic livestock.
The outbreak occurred on a turkey farm near the city of Plock, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Warsaw, said deputy chief state veterinarian Krzysztof Jazdzewski.
Initial tests indicate the H5N1 strain of the virus, and samples have been sent to the State Veterinary Institute in Pulawy for final confirmation, Jazdzewski added.
Authorities ordered farmers to keep poultry indoors and launched inspections of farms within three kilometers (2 miles) of the outbreak.
Speaking with reporters in Gdansk, Prime Minister Donald Tusk assured Poles there was "no reason to panic."
The H5N1 strain was first detected in Poland in wild swans last year.
The disease has ravaged poultry stocks in Asia, and scientists believe it spread to Europe and to Africa with migratory wild birds.
Though bird flu is difficult for people to catch, it has killed at least 206 people worldwide. Experts believe most victims were probably infected through direct contact with sick birds. In Europe, human cases have been recorded in Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Also it has been announced due to the outbreak in Płock, central Poland, that information bulletins will be passed out in schools tomorrow, Monday December 3rd. Local priests have also stepped in to supply information to local residents.
Ongoing research is being carried out it infected areas in farms around the town of Płock. Vehicles passing through the area are also being disinfected.
Anna Obuchowska, spokeswoman for the Sanitary Inspectorate in the Pomorze region, has stated that the meat came from two warehouses, in Żukow and Sierakowice.
The Żukow plant supplied meat to shops in Gdańsk and Gdynia, with the Sierakowice source providing shops in Człuchów, Chojnice, Kościerzyna and Kartuzy.
Obuchowska has said that there is a search for remaining meat in the shops, but it is unlikely that any remains, as the turkey meat was delivered to the shops at the beginning of the previous week.

WARSAW (Reuters) - Three poultry farms northwest of Warsaw were cordoned off after the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu was found in turkeys, officials said on Saturday.
There are plans to cull 4,000 birds. The cases were found at farms around the village of Brudzen near the city of Plock, Poland's chief veterinary officer Ewa Lech said on television.
Lech said the virus was most likely brought to Poland by migrating ducks, geese or swans and an area within a 3-km radius of the outbreak had been cordoned off.
"Areas of contamination and danger have been marked off," said Plock crisis management official Hilary Januszczyk. "The area is being constantly monitored by veterinary officials and the police."
The virus has caused more than 200 deaths in humans globally since 2003, according to World Heath Organization data.
Most people who have caught bird flu have had direct or indirect contact with infected fowl but experts fear the constantly mutating virus could change into a form easily transmitted from person to person.
Poland's efforts to contain the spread of the virus won the approval of the European Commission.
"The Polish authorities notified us in the middle of the night about a strong suspicion of bird flu," European Commission spokeswoman Barbara Helfferich told Reuters.
"We have been in contact with them since then, they are now taking the appropriate measures."
Bird flu was discovered in Poland in early 2006, in wild swans, near the city of Torun.
"There is no cause for alarm," Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on television. "I am in touch with the interior and health ministers as well as veterinary officials in charge. This is not the kind of threat we had several years ago."
