Try to get the 50mm f/1.8.
Try to get the 50mm f/1.8.
what is the advantage of that?
is $350 the going rate for that type of lens?
I don't know the Canon line well but the 50 mm f/1.8 should sell for around $100 and the f/1.4 for $350. The aperture increase is not significant but the lens construction is drastically different. Here's a shot that I took with the Nikon 50 mm f/1.4 (on a D80 body) that I've posted many times on this forum.

When you get there, you might wish to click on the "Nine-O-Nine" at the top. That shot was taken with an 85mm f/1.8 on a film SLR. The other two shots were with a Casio P&S.

Don't fall for the MP trap...it's mostly a selling gimmick. 8 MP is plenty for normal size portrait shots
what is the advantage of that?
Pros:
-sharp as can be
-best bang for buck, $75 prime that can be sharper than a $1200 zoom
-good for low light with 1.8
-good bokeh @ 1.8
-autofocuses fairly quickly
Cons:
-cheap construction, brittle lens
-5 aperture blads for choppy pentagon bokeh
-crappy manual focus ring
6MP DSLR > 20MP Point and Shoot
DSLR is your best bet.

DSLR is always better than a P&S.
