I just recently started playing EQ2 again and I am very aware its a major system hog and doesnt have quite the taste nearly as pvp tasty as L2. But they added this new thing that caught my attention.

The pvp server is basically Freeport vs Qyenos, but they added this thing called "Exiles" which is seperate from FP and Q. You can choose to go the "Exiled" Path if you wish too.

    *** Exiles *** Added June 14th 2006

    Player-versus-Player Server Exiles:

    - If a player on a PvP server does not belong to either Freeport or Qeynos (i.e. they are in the act of betrayal), they will become an Exile.

    - Exiles have their own language: Argot. Communication rules are the same as the other alignments.

    - Upon betraying, Exiles receive an unchangeable suffix title of "the Exile."
    - Exiles forgo all PvP city rewards once they betray.

    - Lucanic Knights/Royal Antonican Guard faction, as well as infamy/fame and titles are wiped as soon as you betray your city.

    - Exiles are open to attack by players regardless of the zone they are in or their level. You will only find protection within the caves of Haven.

    - An Exile can attack citizens of Freeport, Qeynos, and even other Exiles.

    - While you are encouraged to hone your skills on the battlefield against those of your ranks, you will only receive rewards for killing members of the opposing alignments. These rewards are limited to title modifications when appropriate, experience, and coin/item drops.

    - While Haven may seem like a convenient place, there is a price to pay for seclusion. Prices from the merchants are significantly higher, and Exiles do not have access to shared bank slots.

    - Exiles wishing to travel to the Sinking Sands will need to sneak into the docks of either Freeport or Qeynos and catch a ride on one of the carpets.

    - Players can now betray their city at any time after level 10.

    - You will now slowly work your faction up with the city you are betraying to (or back to the one you originally betrayed) in order to be accepted within the city walls.

    - Until such a time as you are accepted as a citizen of Qeynos or Freeport, you will be an Exile and must only operate out of a new underground location known as Haven.

Those Exiles are a pain in the butt all around. D Then you make your skills check and--if you pass--you whip up a new item or ability.

    - Haven does not provide the plush lifestyle of Qeynos or Freeport--You'll miss out on some of aspects of the city life such as writs, full use of brokers, player housing (apart from Maj'Dul), or city-based rewards.

So far some of my experiences in PVP were damn right fun. If you ever get a chance check it out, and the grind is not nearly as bad as it was. And the average level on the Nagafen server, which I play on is, lvl 25-30's. Trust me everyone shuts up when a lvl 70 (very few) walks by checking if anyone is flagging.

Here are some screenies of mine, of some new zones that were added with the Dynasty Adv pack, some Eastern culture. ^_^

  • I wouldn't exactly say it failed (they prolly had higher expectations after EQ, tho), but SOE merged servers and moved their Asian customers to US servers earlier this year - I really hope they're well populated now

BTW, Vanguard is the project of an independent studio led by the former EQ lead designer and it just happens to be published by SOE after Microsoft dropped it. Vanguard so far seems to be aimed at, and considered by mostly EQ veterans and those hardcore players who still play the old game and consider EQ2 or WoW to be too easy - they're also the most outspoken group of people on the Vanguard forums, hysterically opposing any change which would make the game more accessible. If the devs finalize their game based on that input (and Brad McQuaid is known to have very old-school ideas about how MMOs have to work), it will be hard pressed to attract enough customers to beat Auto Assault's subscriber numbers, let alone become a greater success than EQ2 which is aimed at a much, much wider audience

Vanguard uses the EQ2 Engine, and is being touted as the "spiritual successor to EverQuest" right?

EQ2 failed in it's own right, maybe not by general MMO standards, but considering like you said they were expecting such huge numbers due to EQ and more people playing MMO's, it did.

Anyway, people should post more screens! And make PVP fraps :P

  • Yea Exiles have alot of dissadvantages but the only advantage is the raids. They claim the highest raid awards because their raid groups consist of both benefits of Q and FP, raids go smoothly with their parties. And the exile pvp groups are much difficult to handle and take down. Ive seen like only 2 exile members. And going exile is only for the hardcore. Last night at one of the griffon towers, the Q's and FP actually worked together to take down a lvl 40 exile that was stealthed there...rofl of course after the killed the exile, they turned on each other and tore each other apart lol then the remaining Q's grabbed their horses and retreated as fast as they could. >=D

  • wow i dont think I want to play vanguard anymore, i was reading some threads in the community forums, every1 is so fucking carebear. they are almost ALL anti pvp.

  • the eq2 pvp system is retarded. It's basically 5-6 ppl that are 8 lvls higher than what they kill that rush in and kill noobs then leaves again...

was at 789 kills vs 150 deaths after 2 weeks of playing

    it's pure retardness.

    Agreed 100%.

I had easily 500+ pvp's in the game. (and I was a wizard. yay for being droped all the time).

  • Like 25 servers? I think they're well populated too

I think EQ2 is a decent game, I dunno why it failed, they're trying to makeup for that in it's spirtual successor "Vanguard" though.I wouldn't exactly say it failed (they prolly had higher expectations after EQ, tho), but SOE merged servers and moved their Asian customers to US servers earlier this year - I really hope they're well populated now

  • need a new god damn game to play ><

  • Is this game still decently populated?

Anyway, people should post more screens! And make PVP fraps :Pfans of Vanguard call it spiritual successor to EQ because for the old-school players EQ2 is too "carebear", too easy, and I'd say too modern, the same sentiments can be found in every 2nd post on the official Vanguard forums - they hope it to become their new hardcore home (McQuaid left to create Sigil when EQ2 wasn't far into development yet so the game didn't exactly turn out like he and his old-school buddies once thought). It's using some version of Unreal Engine I think, and yes SOE bought publishing rights for the game from Microsoft (announcement was made during this year's E3) - development and all this stuff is still Sigil's job, Sony merely does the technical side (promotion, servers, customer service)

it's pure retardness.exactly, but then again I fail to see how that's different in L2 (eg.) where there are no limits whatsoever (ie. you occasinally have the guy 30 levels or more higher with gear many times as powerful, levelling a newb area before people bring their higher level alts or friends). At least EQ2 has a different ruleset for PvP, ie. no retardedly overpowered items and skills just because they're needed for mobs with gazillions of hitpoints in PvE.

And yes I see the raid issue too, I played a defiler as a Freeportian on Nagafen, when mystics were generally considered the better raid shamans after the class overhauls, so it might make sense to go Queynos, pick mystic and then go exile for raiding (then again, I'm not masochistic enough to do this on any of EQ2's PvP servers...)

  • Is this game still decently populated?

I see a lot more people there than L2 but I dunno....

  • My girlfriend and I play on Nagafen server, Freeport, anyone else??

  • exile system sounds overly prohibitive IMOTBH - I don't see the point besides being able to fight and be fought by everyone else, nice screenshots, haven't experienced the game past the lvl.20 zones
