I don't have a good answer to your question except to say that a child that is not emancipated and who is not 18 and is living with their parents should have to get their permission before doing much of anything. In some states the parents are held responsible for the actions of their children, even for criminal liability. But in the same states children are given freedom of choice to do certain things without their parent's knowledge (abortion is one).
The abortion clinic will perform the abortion on demand but guess who gets stuck with the bill? Yep, the parents.

The problem in discussing the issue is that both sides aren't really arguing about the same fundamental issue. Pro-life advocates argue "you're killing an innocent child" while pro-choice advocates counter "you're violating my rights to do as I please with my body." Both sides would mae a lot of progress if they argue out the underlying issue of this debate: when does life begin? If you believe life begins at conception, then it makes sense that you equate abortion with murder (but I think people who make exceptions for incest or rape are hypocritical since being a product of one of those tragic situations still makes you no less of a human). And conversely, if you believe life does not begin at conception, it makes sense that you believe telling someone what they can/cannot do with something that is just a part of their body (in the early stages that is) is a violate of your rights.

Both sides need to see it from a bioethical point of of view. And if they do not believe life begins at conception, they need to really define when it does and with scientific evidence. I think it's the arbitrary number of trimesters/weeks that trips some people up. For this reason, I am personally ambivalent about the issue.
Just another paradox of the 2 sides.
Kind of like how many parents say it is the right of the adult to determine what child is taught about sex....but children should be able to choose hoe all life on earth came to be as it is of their own free choice.

Well, when you're 12 and raped by your father, how do you ask him for permission for an abortion?
Most 12 year olds cannot safely carry or deliver a child. If the parents were to force her to have the child it could possibly kill her and/or the baby. The 12 year old should have the choice since it is her life that is at risk from the pregnancy. She likely wasn't mature enough to make a competant decision on sex, or she wouldn't have gotten pregnant at that age.
Personally I think they should peirce whatever they want, tattoo whatever, have their hair cut/dyed however as long as they don't bring me home a grandchild that I have to raise because they made a poor choice and can't deal with it now.

And I don't think it is the place of the government to tell others what to do with their bodies. No more than I think it is fine for the government to tell someone that they would have to have life saving procedures done if they are choosing not to have it done.
What I don't get is where you think it is fine for the government to step in and tell us that we have to do something if we don't want to. What if the 12 year old can't support a baby, and neither can the parent(s)? What if there is some psychological issues, health issues, or mental issues that you know nothing about? I work with the developmentally disabled, and they can no more give concent for sexual relations than they can decide if they would like to have a baby, or even care for a baby themselves.
Where do you get off telling someone they have to be pregnant, even if they choose not to? And you honestly think that by making abortions illegal that will stop them? Cocaine is illegal, but yet still a problem for many in the US. Laws don't stop people from doing things; it makes it harder and more dangerous for them to get something. I would rather my 12 year old daughter be able to SAFELY get an abortion if she chose to do that in a clinic or hospital that is regulated by the government and medical agencies. Making something illegal means removing all regulations from it, thus making it unsafe.

Because many times the reason a 12 year old is pregnant is because she is raped by one of the people responsible for giving her permission to get her ears pierced, her father. Do you think a man who does that is going to let his child tell on him if he can avoid it? The law is imperfect, but children should be kept safe from predators.

In some states they do need permission from a parent or judge to get an abortion.
A 12 year old can not get an abortion with out parental consent in my state.
