Problem playing AVI...
Published by: smith 2009-01-07

  • any idea why it will not play this avi? i've not had problems with any other avi and i have all the mplayer codecs installed.

    avi specs:

    video
    size = 351 mb
    resolution = 624x352
    fps = 23.98
    codec = xvid mpeg-4
    bitrate = 1054 kbps
    quality factor = .2 b/px

    audio
    channels = 2
    sample rate = 44100 hz
    bitrate = 104 kbps
    codec = mp3

  • well my problem is now fixed.
    before, when i used to try and play these files, xbmc would lock up.

    now it gives a useful error message in the log and returns to xbmc.

    turns out it was a codec dll that i needed for these video9 files.

    i put in all the codecs from the xbmcdbr codec pack, now works fine :)

    hope this will help others.

  • using vd removed a/v up to first keyframe and resaved...

    still problems:

  • how do you tell what codec they use?press info on the remote while playing the file in xbmc or look in the log, and use yaai (http://sourceforge.net/projects/yaai) or gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) on a win pc.

    ps! your problem is probebly not related to the issue affini is having so please post a new topic thread instead.

  • sounds like a missing initial keyframe; open file in virtualdub, (set to direct stream on both video and audio) and cut out everything before the first keyframe and then save as a new file. then check if can play in xbmc, (if it played then that means it was a corrupt file however) if that new file plays fine in xbmc then please try to play the original-problem-file in latest mplayer for win32 (and also in a xbmc build from before 1st of august if possible) to test, ...if it played in mplayer and 'old' xbmc then it's a bug in new xbmc cvs (which was probebely introduced with the ffmpeg update on 31st of juli 2005)

  • in last log you ran out of memory.. lower cache

  • where can i dl a compiled mplayer for the pc. i dl'd one but it was only command line and did not work at all.
    the official mplayer is only available in command-line and that is the one you should use, however there are seveal gui-frontends available that you can download and use with mplayer:
    http://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/releases/win32/
    http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/projects.html (look for gui frontend under "windows")

    ps! i asked you to "direct stream" the audio and video in virtualdub, not re-encode it (direct stream doesn't reencode anything), ...by the way; didn't virtualdub detect any errors?

  • btw... this file plays fine on my pc.

    Generally speaking, playing an AVI requires two things: a video player software and a codec. The problem is called the codec.

  • i don't believe i re-encodedi thought you reencoded because you wrote "i used vd to re-encode... it turned a 360 mb avi into a 38gb avi" however it sounds now like you didn't do that.

    error i get when loading the original avi in vd...
    http://members.cox.net/affini/vd_error.jpgthat do mean your audio-track is corrupt/messed-up and will need to be re-encoded (just the audio-track), to do that you need to open the original file in virtualdub again; set 'direct stream' on video only this time and compress on audio, in audio settings convert to uncompressed-pcm and save and as a new file (this is what virtualdub means when it state to "decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed wav file), then when done open that new file in virtualdub and again set 'direct stream' on video only this time and compress on audio but this time in audio settings change to convert to mp3 (recommend cbr instead of vbr) and save as a new file, that new file should now be fixed. * ...sure you can try to skip the first "decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed wav file" and convert directly from vbr-mp3 to cbr-mp3 but that could like virtualdub state introduce a skew (ie. time delay) in the audio/video sync.

    ps! still suggest you try to play the file in mplayer for win32 on a windows pc though, and if get same problem there report it to mplayer becuase they might be able to fix in it the future.

  • will not play = means ?

    any log output to go with that statement ?

  • i have similar problems with some avis, actually, quite a few avis.
    how do you tell what codec they use?
    when i try and play them, the video kind of starts then xbmc crashes and i have to reboot the xbox.

    i'll try and get a log file together, and also try an older version of xbmc.

  • ps! i asked you to "direct stream" the audio and video in virtualdub, not re-encode it (direct stream doesn't reencode anything), ...by the way; didn't virtualdub detect any errors?

    i don't believe i re-encoded... i did a "save as" and it took about 30 seconds to save the file. if i re-encoded it would take 30-60 minutes. under both 'video' & 'audio' menus i have "direct stream copy" selected.

    if there is another way i should do it please let me know. i've never used vd before.

    error i get when loading the original avi in vd...

    http://members.cox.net/affini/vd_error.jpg

  • i used vd to re-encode... it turned a 360 mb avi into a 38gb avi... wow!

    anyway, after the encoding it still cannot play on xbmc but works fine on windows media player on the pc (as did the original).

    i will do some more testing but it looks like the pc software is much more forgiving.

    where can i dl a compiled mplayer for the pc. i dl'd one but it was only command line and did not work at all.
