Problem with .MKV files (Matroska)

Published by: wktd 2009-01-07
  • hi all!

    the problem:
opening *.mvk file with subtitles and ac 5.1 sound in it. result is fucked up picture and scracthing sound.

why 'o why? doesn't the xbox have enough power to decode it or is the codec outdated? xbmc version is xbmc-cvs_2006-05-28-t3ch

  • yes, xbmc is know to have problems decoding

    1) 16384x16384 videos with 5.1 sound in matroska.
    2) 1millx1mill videos with 5.1 sound in matroska.
    3) idiotic requests for help

  • well let me think... i asked for info what i couldn't find anywhere. i didn't ask for help. just asked why it is so. you shouldn't got freeked out for that and i'm just amazed that even here the "so-called-developers" are same fuckfaces what i can find everywhere else. i'm not trying to pick a fight, i'm just fed up with this selfishness all around the world.

if i wanted help the message would have gone something like this:
    -----
problem: sound and picture of *.mkv files
    video: xvid 704x396 (mkv container) / h264 704x480 16:9
    audio: ac3 5.1
    subtitles: english soft-subbed

picture starts to struggle (just like playing too hevy graphic settings with pc, or running too many programs background while waching movie and picture starts skip frames) and sound struggles too.

is there way to fix this frame skipping in the user end or is it depending on the decoding end?

  • you mean that this was an idiotic request for help? maybe you should add some info 'bout problems with *.mkv or matroska to your online manual / faq. that prob. would help if the answering is so fustrating! geez...

  • thanks for the info. not so dumb anymore.

what goes with the forum rules.... you really should make them sticky ones to stay 1st on the topic listing. i tried to search before posting with keyword "rules" and from the whole forum. didn't match...

actually my opinion of devs being fuckfaces has come in 10 years of observering diffrent forums/chats. if somebody is noob and don't know exactly every slang word or doesn't have the knowledge to pin point the exact problem he is dumb and don't get anything else than unrelevant shit on his neck. maybe you never were noobs and never asked from anyone. if you have all sorted out without help, thumbs up, but why give the noobs hard time on their ignorance? i have to admit that everybody doesn't search first the info beacouse it's easier to ask for it and i hate those.

i would like to help ppl in this forum, but my freetime neither skills aren't enough. also liked to help the xbmc go on, but i have no skills for it. only thing i can imagine to do is translate xbmc to finnish but somebody took that job already.

you give absolutely no info on video res, video bitrate, video codeci

i see no logs of the problem occuring.

if u call your car retailer and says

'my car doesn't work. fix it. it has 4 wheels'

do you really expect him to be able to solve the problem?

  • i'm not trying to pick a fight. it's just that it's clearly stated in the rules (+ should be damn obvious) that in order to help you out, we need info. and, while you didn't ask for help, you did ask us to answer a question. to answer the question we need to know what you are actually asking.

for your general question, the answer is "depends". is that the answer you wanted?

    however;

i can now tell you that the problem is the video encoding, h.264.

it's simply too demanding on resources as you suspected. it's nothing you as a user can do atm, short of reencoding / doing a compatible encoding in the first place (there are special h264 profiles out there known to work with xbmc if you insist of using it instead of xvid, search if you are interested).

oh, did you ever consider that the reason devs are 'fuckfaces' is because you leave no other option? if this is your normal detail level, i totally understand them devs.

oh, and me being selfish. i agree, it's truly selfish of us to dedicate most (true) of our spare time to make xbmc which you can use for free. remind me, how much time have you spent on developing xbmc and doing user support lately?

just to give u an idea. i spent 20h this weekend, fixing a feature i had no pesonal interest in.

  • hello, i might have found a reason to why the mkv/h.264 is dropping frames.
i recently made a thread about my discover:
    http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin....l=h.264 (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=2;t=20827;hl=h.264)

i think that the problem has to do with a/v syncing.
the xbox is fully capable of playing (to a certain extent) h.264 encoded movies, since i managed to get 0 framedrops while experimenting with the sound.
i simply screwed the syncing up, the sound was 4-5 seconds behind, and the video was playing flawelessly.
