I tried Outpost V2 yesterday and found it to be a superb firewall in every way except for one. I could not get ICS to work correctly. I read every post on these forums and tried everything. I got to the point where I had wasted too many hours and decided to reninstall my Norton IS 2002. Needless to say NIS worked first time, went through it's home network wizard and correctly detected and set up the firewall for ICS. So my system works again using NIS.

I decided that I would just keep checking this forum to see if the ICS ssues get solved and then try Outpost when it gets fixed.

But, hang on, this firewall is so good why can't this be sorted out so that you don't have to frig around with settings to try to enable ICS. I found no reference to ICS in the Outpost help other than to say that V2 supports it! Can I request that some form or script or ICS wizard be created to set up Outpost to use ICS. Can it be that difficult?

I have been looking for a good firewall for some time and this is just so frustrating that now I have found the best firewall, to find that ICS does not work for me.

By the way, I have also tried Zone Alarm, 4 and that worked fine as well with ICS.

Configuration: Gateway PC: XP SP1 with Rollup 1 update. 2 NICS, NIC 1 is home network using simple 10Mb 4-way hub with 2 other Client XP SP1 PC's attached. NIC 2 connectes directly to 600K cable modem. The home network is manually configured to 192.168.0.1 & 2 & 3.

  • So does Outpost v2 work with ICS or what?

  • I went from ICS to router because fo ICS problems. I didn't have Outpost yet. I just hate ICS. And I enjoy the added protection of the router anyway.

  • Many thanks for the replies.

chrisclu - I take your resonse to buy a router to confirm my thoughts that ICS just will not work for some systems. Big shame.

  • chrisclu - Thanks for clarifying that. I read your post as Outpost did not work with ICS.

I find that ICS works very well indeed if set up correctly on XP systems. ICS also woks very well with NIS. I just cannot get it to work with Outpost and I think the issue is having 2 NICs in the system which Outpost is unable to deal with.

I hope Outpost gets sorted out soon as the rest of the application has had so much thought put into it.

  • Hi Gary,
Why not lose ICS and get a router?
Much simpler and you get an added layer of protection.
I had all sorts of trouble with ICS. I love my router.

  • I am running outpost on a machine with ICS and everything's working fine. It's one of the reasons I bought oupost is that it works with ICS.
    see
    http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/features.html

I have outpost installed on the machine that's serving the connection, and the address of the machine that's using the conection remotely (the client) is added to the trusted zone.

I tested both the client and server with pcflank to test the firewall for both server and client, and both passed fine.

ICS Server is XP Pro as is the client. This also works for me when the server is Win2003 Standard server and client is XP Pro. The ICS software I'm using is the standard software that's included within XP / win2K / win2003.
