QPR to host Ajax in July 21st pre-season friendly

Published by: cfz 2009-01-07

  • QPR will face Dutch powerhouse Ajax (http://www.qpr.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10373~524186,00.html) on July 21st in a pre-season friendly at Loftus Road. The match is at 7:45 that night (a Wednesday) and ticket details will be released soon.

Nice catch for the R's -- should be great fun.

In other Loftus Road news, the R's are hosting the Australia-New Zealand game in the Rugby League Tri-Nations tournament (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/sport/football/articles/10698969) on 23 October, which should net QPR "a five-figure sum - plus all bar and catering takings."

  • The club has confirmed pre-season games (http://www.qpr.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10373~528468,00.html) against Bristol Rovers on 27 July and Inverness CT (date not mentioned in story, but reported elsewhere as 17 July) and adds notice of another game while in Scotland, against Highland League side Nairn County on 14 July.

  • If the Milwaukee Wave guy Krause buys into the club, I'd hope that would increase the chance of QPR coming over for pre-season in the future.

Interestingly, this article dated yesterday afternoon from the North Scotland Press and Journal (http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=104339&command=displayContent&sourceNode=104337&contentPK=10116130) says, "They (Inverness Caley Thistle) have already agreed to play Hartlepool and Aberdeen and hope to persuade Queens Park Rangers to come north as well." And, this one from Sportinglife (http://www.sportinglife.com/football/scottishpremier/news/story_get.dor?STORY_NAME=soccer/04/05/26/SOCCER_SPL.html) says, quoting the ICT director of football, "We will play Hartlepool and Aberdeen, while we are awaiting confirmation from Queens Park Rangers."

So, QPR announced the match on their official website on May 26, but ICT isn't sure we've confirmed as of May 27?

  • I'll definitely be in the Bush for that. Strongly leaning towards our friendly in Inverness (vs Caley Thistle) as well. Never been to the Highlands - who's up for it?

  • Not sure if it's been announced yet, but QPR will be playing unglamorous London non-league club Hanwell Town in a late July (20-something) pre-season match.

I just moved to London (West Ealing to be exact) from Canada (Vancouver) on Monday, and have adopted Hanwell Town as my glory-hunting local. Popped by the ground today, and some bloke named Adam was tending to the pitch and the clubhouse. He filled me in.

HTFC doesn't even seem to have a website (only their youth side does)! I'll have to fix that.

I quite fancy this fixture, as I was in Korea for a year recently, and supported Busan I'cons, the K-League side Jamie Cureton played for. I might have to bring my I'cons kit with "Curo" written on the back in Korean writing. And perhaps burn it. ;)

  • In other pre-season news, a report indicates (http://www.footymad.net/leagues/loadfnws.asp?id=159178&teamno=431) that QPR will play at Bristol Rovers on July 27th in a match that will serve both as pre-season tune-up and a testimonial for 26-year-old ex-Rovers player Jamie Shore, whose career was ended by a serious knee injury.

  • I wish I could go to these games this summer. Unfortunately my only chances of seeing QPR here in the States will be if they make the Premiership.

Pitch right on the shore.

The IMG code is off on this board, so I can't post a picture, but it's available here:

In other pre-season news, Kingstonian's manager says (http://www.richmondandtwickenhamtimes.co.uk/sport/localsport/display.var.492206.0.ks_recall_ball.php) he hopes to line up pre-season friendlies against QPR, Chelsea, Fulham, and AFC Wimbledon.

Don't count it out so fast - the idea has been discussed by the club. In fact, it wouldn't suprise me at all if it happened next summer. Then again - we could be on our way to the Premiership next summer ;)
