Received a Mexican Red Knee in the mail?
Published by: admin 2009-01-07

  • I received a mexican red knee in the mail today and it doesnt want to move at all, even when i touch it. The container was warm and moist so its suposed to be ok. Is it posible that it might be dead? It is very small and the person selling the spiderlings said it ate 2 days ago. I'm really concerned that it doesnt make any movement. :(

  • rip its legs off to make sure its dead and my person favourite drown it

  • They are skittish after shipping. Just leave it alone for the next few days and don't mess with it at all. No reason to add handling stress on top of shipping stress. I generally don't even offer food for the first week because they are just not at home enough yet to eat..

Generally, a dead tarantula will have all of it's legs curled up under it. Even if it's legs are curled under it, it's best to just leave it alone for a few days to make sure it is really dead. Sometimes they are just getting ready to molt and thus don't move. Just put it in a quiet place and check on it again tomorrow. They feel a lot more comfortable at night, so you may check in the morning and find that your tarantula has disappeared down into the substrate..

Or a Mexican red knee tarantula. I already have a pet spider, . do not carry this variety, but it is often available via mail order.

I've had many tarantulas shipped and have never lost one in shipping. Of course though, there's always the off chance it has come in contact with pesticide.
