Any help much appreciated

I would go for the 70-300 VR as well
What about the Nikkor 55-200 VR? You can get very decent shots specially with the VR feature, and it is about 200 bucks
sell your 18 - 55 and get the 18 - 200....

The 70-300 VR gets my vote as well.
The Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 is quite nice as well and will weigh in around $800 new.
