    Hi,

It thought it would be interesting to know the first few remarks that a new user has, as these will determine buy/no-buy decisions, perhaps more that the advanced features.
After 5 minutes of use, my first two remarks are :

    1. Keep document explorer open when all documents are closed.
If I've finished on a document that is the only open document, and want to start working on another, I would probably first close the 1st document, then select the 2nd one from the "explorer" and double-click it to open it.
Unfortunately the explorer disappears when I close my first document ! I find this not very user-friendly. Am I alone on this one ?

    2. Allow a keyboard shortcut for the 'Tag Insight' feature.
The 'intellisense' feature or "Tag Insight" as it is called here, pops up after a few seconds. I prefer to be able to 'ask' for this type of editing helper with a key stroke. In many editors the keystroke to make the intellisense pop-up is . However, in 1st Page 2006 this inserts a non-breaking space. No problem here if I could customize the keystrokes, but I don't think I can assign the 'Tag Insight' action to a key-stroke, or can I ? As I said...I only looked at the program for about 5 minutes...

To evrsoft : Don't bother implementing if no one agrees with me.
To the readers : if you agree with me, give me a "Hear, hear" below :)

    Thanks,

    Ebo

  • There is one way to do it now. It's not the best solution, yours would be better, either to have it open even after a document is cloed or to have an explorer option at the top along with file and help. Anyway, I hope I can explain this clearly because I only found it by accident.

I was trying to move the tab to the right where it is on my 2000 so I pulled at it and it came free, but it wouldn't set anywhere, though it will move around. I noticed at the top to the left of the List Documents Open icon there was a set of small horizontal lines. This is where the tab was to go it seems as far as setting it. When it is free 1st Page expands the the full width taking up the space where the bar was, so that means the bar sat over the page. To fix it, I minimized 1st Page using the little page icon between the _ and X and then used the mouse to resize it leaving enough space on the desktop for the bar at the right. When I closed the document, lo and behold the explorer bar was still there even though I was back to the gray blank program screen. When I closed the program everything closed and then when I opened it again, the screen was the size I had set and the explorer bar was still on the right where I put it. So, it seems once set it will stay that way :)

What is the 'tag insight' feature you mentioned?

    Ruth

  • I have been using First Page for almost 4 years and find it a terrific tool. I eagerly downoaded the newest version (2006) and was very pleased with the latest program. However, I have noticed that when I try and comment out a block of code, the colour only changes to my preferred comment colour for the first line only, and not the entire block of commented code. This makes it very difficult to see what is commented at a glance.

I am sure this a minor and easily corrected oversight.

    Thanks.

  • Tag insight is the popup you get when you start typing a tag by entering a 'smaller-than' token : "<". A list of available tags will pop up after 3 seconds.

This list is what Evrsoft calls 'tag insight'. Most programming editors have such a feature, amongst other intelligent features to make the editor help you in your typing of code and the most common name for it is 'intellisence'.
In fact, there's a bit of a race going on to make editors as intelligent as possible.
For a HTML editor, this added intelligence could mean that the popup list could pre-select the most likely tag you would select.
E.g.if you have just typed a tag, most likely your next tag would be a , so the popup list could already pre-select it for you. You just have to confirm the selection or scroll to another tag if needed.
One step further : an intelligent editor may 'learn' from you.
E.g. if you always follow a
tag with a tag instead of a tag, the editor may 'learn' this and determine that you have a preference for and in the future pre-select that one, instead of the tag.
I don't think many editors have included that last level of intelligence, but I'm sure it won't take long.
One of the most intelligent editors available is Intellij's IDEA, but it's intelligence is focussed at java code, not HTML or javascript, and it's a rather expensive editor.

One problem is that many editors try to incorporate these features, but neglect the useability of it. So in some cases you end up disabling this feature because it is too annoying ! An example of that is Quest's Sql-Navigator, which pops up all over the place in their Oracle sql and pl/sql editor.
Hence my suggestion for 1st Page: if you can choose to have the popup displayed only at user-request (a key-combination), this would be considered more user-friendly, at least by some users.

  • Well there are advanced more expensive editors one could save up for. This is free and compares well with others. I don't use if for commercial production, but I recommend it to those that want to edit my sites since it does offer some nice basic features as well as advanced ones.

User opinions are always nice to read :) but just a thought, perhaps a full test of the program is not great after 5 minutes? It would be great for at least a full day IMO :order:

  • Update:

    2. Allow a keyboard shortcut for the 'Tag Insight' feature.
^ This is now in BETA 2. Simply press Ctrl-Space to reveal CSS Insight or Tag Insight.
BETA 2 should be out soon.

  • I'm an old and true user of past FP release, and I've been waiting for several years to this day where I finaly had the chance to dl the final release of FP.

What my first 5 minutes expirence was that I might have expected me more, and to be honest, is it evrsofts seriously thoughts that they would get paid for this? I mean after 5 years should there have been more redical changes and modifications from the original and first FP.

Anyway! It's still an very powerful tool to creating pages, and if they continue the product as an freeware/shareware product and eventually paypal I'll think that they would keep their possion to the be the best and the most populary product at the market at it's class.

    And now to my requests.

In the past release was there cgi scripts included as instant scripts, would it be possible to replace this with php scripts and asp scripts to cut and paste. I think that you could have an appoinment with hotscripts.com etc.

    At last!

I've allready downloaded the latest version of fp, and I'm satisfied as it is and would like to keep it and use it.

Cheers! and happy new year 2006

    Jens

  • Terrific!!! Will there be a post to this so we know when it is out? Or is there another topic I can watch to make sure I know right away? I didn't see the last until late... No one's fault by my own :(

    Ruth

  • The tag insight is is kind of slow to show its face. If you wait a few seconds while working within a tag you will see it pop out of hiding.

  • Hear, hear!

  • Well, I haven't disabled it, I checked until I found it and it is checked, but nothing pops up. At least most of the time. I remember seeing something once. Maybe it should be on a context menu when you go to type a tag.
