"Samples taken from poultry at the two households are currently being analyzed in a laboratory in Bucharest to determine if they are truly the H5N1 form," said Gabriel Predoi, director of Romania's National Health-Veterinary Agency (ANSV).

If the H5N1 strain is confirmed in the new cases from the towns of Dunarea and Valea Nucarilor, more than 30,000 birds will have to be slaughtered in the coming days, say authorities. .
With quarantines in place in affected areas across the country, Romania is one of the European countries most severely hit by bird flu. .
