Can someone tell me if you still get the same benefits from running in place as you would from going for a run? Some days I need to be doing some running but it's pouring rain outside. Any alternatives I can do indoors for fitness?
try kicking a small ball around inside - always try to have a ball involved in your workouts to improve your touch
yeah, i was wondering that too...but just didnt mention it. but why cant you just train in the rain? i always train in the wet, cold, wind, snow...doesn't matter...our team trains no matter what.
also, running in place gives your calfs no work out. When you actually run, you use your calfs when you push to keep going....you just lift your legs running in place
Well you won't get sick from running in the rain anymore than you would running when it isn't raining. The idea is to not get cold and wet at the same time. If you're running at a rate to actually improve your fitness then your body will be creating enough heat to keep you from getting sick. yeah, honestly...running in place won't do a lot of good if you ask me...
I just thought about this...but how about jumping rope? If you've got the room to run in place, then you've got the room to jump rope. Very good for the cardiovascular system, and works on footspeed as well as quickness, agility, and you can work in explosive work and change how slow/fast you skip rope and it's just an all around good thing for footballers to do. Give it a try, I think you'll be pleasantly suprised.
why not go jogging in the rain?
The most important thing about running is building the cardiovascular system, not the leg muscles. You can do that by running in place.
if you want a good workout not outside, you should do plyometric exercises. i don't have a good routine to recommend, but doing them can build strength and add to your cardiovascular fitness. actually, they're a good idea even if you do have space because they make you more explosive, but should be used in concert with cardio work. they generally require some space, and you won't be able to do some exercises, like bounding or skipping, but there are plenty you can do in a normal-sized room indoors.

Usually I would but my parents have been on my case to not run around in the rain because I've been sick a lot lately. I don't know why, usually I have a very strong immune system but I've been sick twice since school started and am now just gettin over the second one, so I figured I'd exercise inside.
Well, do you have access to a gym? If so, try an exercise bike, or a stair stepper. If not, do you have a garage that is fairly empty? If so, do small plyometric drills that take up little space like cone hops, explosion jumps, etc.
What he said :).
I find then running in place really isn't that helpful. It mught be for others, but to me it just takes to long to work up a sweat and a waste of time really. When I'm stuck inside I try and lift some weights, do some curl ups and jumping excercises.
