Should the FA Cup Winner Get a Champions League Spot?

Published by: rose 2009-01-07

  • If you want clubs to treat the FA Cup as something almost as good as winning the Premier League, then I think you need to have a reward similar to winning the Premier League, namely a spot in the Champions League group stage. Since England has 4 spots, the Premier League champion would also get a group stage spot, while 2nd and 3rd go to the qualifying round. 4th and 5th qualify for the UEFA Cup along with the League Cup winner.

    I would do the following:

    * If neither finalist otherwise qualifies for Europe, then the winner goes to the Champions League, the loser gets nothing (well, runner-up prize money).

    * If the winner finishes in the top 5 (such as last season when Manchester United beat Millwall), then the winner gets a Champions League spot and the loser goes to the UEFA Cup.

Yes, this opens up the opportunity for a non-PL team to make the CL, but if they can win it than don't they deserve it? That doesn't happen very often anyway. I think it would happen even less if a CL spot was on offer. Would anyone dare field a below strength side (assuming they don't draw someone like Yeading) if the promised land was on offer?

I don't see any big downside.

  • I'm old school. I say bring back the Cup Winners' Cup. :p

  • Says who? Why is the 4th place team in the league more deserving than the FA Cup Winner. The latter is a "champion" of something at least, and had to win a major final. If you supported a club and had a choice, which would you choose? And if your answer is different than the club accountant might not that indicate a problem?

Exeter was never going to win the cup, but maybe Millwall could have last year. And if they somehow won, what's wrong with having them in the Champions' League? Who's to say Liverpool deserved to be there more? If they wanted to be in the CL they could have managed better than 4th or won the cup.

This also avoids the situation of the result not meaning anything. Last year, before the final was played, Manchester United was in the CL and Millwall in the UEFA Cup. Under my proposal, a Millwall win would have put them in the group stages directly (a huge financial windfall for them), Chelsea to the qualifying round, and Liverpool to the UEFA Cup. So there would be all to play for. The only situation in which the result would not affect Europe would be if the league champs played the runners-up, but then one team would be going for the double.

Besides, if a CL place were on offer, I think you'd see less non-Premier teams make the late rounds.

  • Defeats the whole purpose of the CL though doesn't it? It's supposed to be a tournament for the best teams in Europe, but theoretically Exeter could've won the cup, and then proceed to get murdered in Europe. And that's not even taking into account problems with travel, stadium sizes etc.

  • LOL a little to much bias toward your league wouldn't you say? nect I bet you want the winner of the Carling cup to get a CL spot and the top 7 in the EPL to get in automatic. You have four spots that are deserved because for one you earned them and unlike alot of leagues 3 of those teams deseve to be there and the fourth is good enough to represent the spot. But the winner of the FA cup? not even if Chelsea won it and finished 5th in the EPL would they deserve to go. Either way it'll never happen. In UEFA cup maybe a qualifying round with the winner of the Taca do Portugal.

  • They are already. Villa Park/Old Trafford.

  • Definitely not. European football should be the reward for consistency over the league season, not a lucky cup run.

  • Did Liverpool? Do you think they would have sent out a non-full strength side against Burnley if a CL spot was on offer for the winner?

  • And make the semis played at neutral grounds which aren't Wembley (even less likely to happen than the above once the FA start having to pay off the thing).

They are already. Villa Park/Old Trafford.

  • hey they had a quite strong side out there baros hyypia dudek pongolle

    these are all internationals

    managers fault

same with man u against exeter

  • My answer to this question is as plain as i can get.............NO !!!

  • Another thought: say you are a pretty good, national team caliber player on a side like say Charlton. Never challenging for the title, but never in relegation trouble either. You want to play in the Champions League. To do that now, you need to move to one of the big three, maybe add Liverpool in there. Otherwise you have no chance. Of course, if none of those clubs are interested in you, then forget it.

If you know that by winning the FA Cup you'll make the CL as well, might you want to stay, figuring your best chance for the CL is that way?

    Maybe not, but maybe so.

  • The League Cup has that rule, losing finalist gets nothing. The loser has a chance rule may help encourage some of the "smaller" teams to go for it, knowing that even if they get say Chelsea in the final they'll still get a European reward. But if they did away with that than so be it.

The champions lg is in my opinion for the champions of their lg. The best teams in europe fighting to be the best team. Fifa and uefa have changed this in that 3rd and 4th teams can play in the champions lg. This maybe for football reasons or for more money. However, the 4 teams that qualify for the champ lg have deserved the chance to play in the elite lg. They are the best 4 teams in the league.

Fa cup. is a traditonal english cup. giant killings, fairy tale endings. Clubs wether they are exeter or arsenal, each club fights to win this cup. teams like exeter for money and pride, teams like southampton for europe. its a traditonal cup, famous all around the world. giving a champions lg path is wrong, uefa cup is about right, or even bring the cup winners cup back!

  • I think it would be good to give the FA cup winners the equivalent of fourth place in the league - a qualifying place for the CL. If the FA cup is as I hear so many people say the greatest cup competition in the world then surely it deserves a better reward? I would prefer to have the Cup Winners Cup back, but I've always thought calling it the Champions League anyway is a bit of a laugh - this year England have two representatives who haven't been champions for at least over a decade.

  • I say bring back the Cup Winners Cup too. But as that's not going to happen then I think the present arrangements are fine although I don't see why the loser should get anything. If the winner has already qualified for Europe then the spare place should go to the next placed finisher in the league which is obviously a much better indicator of the standard of the team and they will be in a better position to reperesent the country strongly. I am also in favour of only the champions of each country being in the Champions League, but that's another argument.

  • Well - A lucky cup run still means beating 4 or 5 opponents in a row - Luck? - Yes - Consistency? - Yes, also

But seriously, only a spot in the UEFA Cup - Or a spot in the qualifying round for the Champion's League Group Play

In fact, only the "Champions" of any league (include the EPL) should get automatic spots in CL Group Play - All others should have to to qualify through single-game pairings -

They done the CL mainly to make money, and also to have the best in Europe. The Belgian Champs had to beat the second place Portuguese team to enter. The result they lost all their CL games. It makes sense though to have the BEST teams even if more than half of the teams come from 3 countries in a 52 country Union. Although 4 teams is a bit high Maximum 3 in CL would be a little better without completely taking away from a deserving strong league.

the FA cup is a cup and everyone even the big teams treat it with the passion and respect that it deserves. The winner of the FA cup goes into the hat for the UEFA cup. This is where the most of the cup winners are. keep it real people.

  • Yup, I'd love to see the winner get the second automatic spot for the Champions League, but wouldn't give the runner-up any qualification should the winner also be Premiership champion (the other team who gets automatic entry to the group stage).

And make the semis played at neutral grounds which aren't Wembley (even less likely to happen than the above once the FA start having to pay off the thing).
