Spontaneous reboots | | Published by: webmaster 2009-01-07 |
I am running Windows2000 Pro SP3, all latest MS patches applied.
I am on a cable connection via SMC Barricade router, and system was pretty well stable on OP V1
I did an update install of V2 over V1, very soon afterwards (20-30 mins) system started to suffer from spontaneous reboots - system would just drop, screen would go blank, no BSOD (no other s/w or h/w was changed).
There is no set pattern. Initially upgraded over V1. Then did a complete uninstall & registry clean as recommended in forum thread. Completely fresh installation still gives problem. As a further test, I have closed & exited OP, disabled in startup, and rebooted. System now seems stable (have been running for 90 mins without a problem) :)
Any ideas anyone?
Startup listing attached :)
Thanks for your help thus far - much appreciated.
Sorry guys - problem is still there.
Later on this week I'll go for a fresh install of the OS (may use XP this time as well :))
jv16 Power tools Registry cleaner is without a doubt the best as far as I'm concerned. If you want to try it, it can be downloaded here. (http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/jv16powertools.shtml) When you go into the reg cleaner section, you can look for uninstalled program entries and delet them. Then click on tools, select registry cleaner and follow the prompts.
uCsimm Archive: Re: [uCsimm] spontaneous reboots.:: If you are having problems with spontaneous reboots, check to see if your rom-image, it will spontaneously reboot to the boot-loader. http://www.uclinux.org/pub/uCsimm/archive/1646.htmlHOME |
Also, you can go here, (http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/) and download Startup List. Just put it in its own directory and run it. It will porduce a test file of everything that loads at boot. You can post that here so I can see if theres anything suspicious looking as far as conflicts might go.
If you prefer, you could email it to me.
Yeah, maybe registry..... is there anything I can run to verify that?
I may have to get back to you on this one - want to stay with V2 as it looks good :)

No, I'm using good old Cat5 cabling :)
I've just restarted OP with Auto updating turned off - I'll see what happens (perhaps the other thing I could try is a complete, fresh rebuild :()
What do you have loading at bootup?
Must be one of two things. Corrupt registry or a conflict with hardware or software. Doubt its hardware.
No, Next Generation (Nokia Firewall NG-1).
Anyway, SecuRemote now not loaded, startup listing showing no evidence of Checkpoint processes. System has been ok so far. I'm off to bed now - check back with you guys tomorrow evening with a status report.
Thanks for your help :)
Quick update:
Still getting problem, even when SecuRemotenot active/running. I have now amended W2K behaviour when it hits an error. Now get BSOD indicating Page Fault in Non-Paged Area, and m entioning FILTNT.SYS (which seems to be an OP file, and also gets a few mentions on this forum).
I am in the process of building XP on another disk, so far no problems at all (have gone many hours without any probs, am still loading in all my stuff, but it seems very stable).
NG = News Group?? :confused:

Also, try unchecking the automatic update checking under tools.
It's the Checkpoint NG client for a VPN link to a company NG firewall.
I'll try things with it disabled, and I'll report back.
Ok. Several things there that could be conflicting.
My first suspicion is the Checkpoint Securemote. Please disable that long enough to see if thats the problem. Make sure no part of it is being loaded.
If this is the problem, we can get Agnitum working on how to fix this, if they can. Is this Checkpoint Firewall, or part of a VPN without a firewall?
