I'm getting the outline of an octopus on my ribs, from my breast to my hip. It has ALOT of meaning to me, and I've wanted it for at least a year. I've watched videos of people getting their ribs tattooed, and I know it's one of the most painful places, and I'm sort of not looking forward to it. Is it really bad the whole way through, or does it numb a bit? And if it's just a simple outline and no shading, should it take more than an hour?
I have a very large pirate ship tattoo on my right ribs. And I'll just say it was pretty painful. I never goes completely numb. Its a constant burning, stinging sensation. And simple outlines are usually more painful. And it will probably take more than an hour. My rib tattoo took 9 hours to complete. It was a 2 day session of 5 hours the 1st and 4 the 2nd. It will be well worth it though.. You just have to think of the end results. Hope all goes well.

the tattoo i have on my wrist went numb like 10 minutes into it. it's pretty small, but it did have quite a bit of detail.
hope that helps you in some way, but i don't know about tattoos on the ribs.
Fine line tattoos [just the outline] hurt W A Y more than others. Since its not in a localized part of your skin, it will probably feel pretty uncomfortable the whole time. When you get smaller tattoos, or large ones that are filled in completely, your skin does start to get a sunburned-numbish feeling after a while. Good luck! that's a gorgeous place to get it on your body! I have a almost foot long tattoo on my back that took 6 hr straight and nothing hurt but the outline! Yahoo! I think I want to get it scrolling on my ribs somehow. I'm not sure but I really want to make it look good! I heard rib tattoos are prone to stretching?

I have a tiger and flowers tat covering my entire right side, and it was painful for every moment. It as the worst right over the hipbone and directly over the ribs, but the places in between were unbelievably painful too. How long it takes depends on your pain tolerance and how many breaks you take. My outline took just over an hour, and I had just one break. Good luck!
oh, btw, your tattoo artist can get vicoden for you if you really want it. I didn't have anything for my first four sessions (I'm doing about an hour each session, and the entire tattoo needs to be colored) but I decided it was worth it for the last one. It all depends on your tolerance.
