and modified it to:

I basically just cut the text from somewhere else and pasted it inside the TOC.
Now this text inside the table of contents has a grey colored shadow like thing around it... any suggestions on how to make it look normal again?

You might also want to check and see what happens to the inserted text when you rebuild the TOC.
try turning the field shading off in Tools - options - view ?
