    I have to write a 5 papragraph essay on this...

    "compare and contrast the two different culutures represented by homers odyssey and virgils aeneid, seperated about 700 years, one greek and one roman. Be sure and write about the heroes of each epic, odysseus and aeneas, as they exemplify the ideals of each culture."

    I understand the part about the heroes, but it's the culture part that is stumping me. I read all of this material, but I am not very apprehensive person when it comes to literature and I need help on how to start my 3 body paragraphs. If i can get 3 topics i can roll with it. Please help me. Thanks!

  • The Greek culture valued physical, military strength very highly. This is evident in the Odyssey and even more so in the Iliad, where everyone we think of as any kind of hero is big, strong and triumphant in battle. As well as that there is personal progress and achievement, like that displayed by Odysseus in the poem. He's not really doing anything for the 'greater good', it's all about how one man singularly defeats the odds and gets to his goal. The triumph of the individual, since, and Greek culture did not have such a strong notion of the unified culture/nation as later people did. Again I will refer to the Iliad for this: the heroes fight for themselves, largely, and for personal glory - not just for the glory of Troy/Greece. In the Odyssey, too, the hero doesn't represent a load of people. It's about HIM.
    The Odyssey::
    first-century BCE epic, The Aeneid, undertakes a heroic journey Of course, Odysseus may embody some traits that you question or do not admire, and this

    Another feature of the Greek culture is the emphasis on cleverness, embodied perfectly in Odysseus. Though bodily strength is important, mental agility is obviously prized highly by the poet/listeners of the poem.
    Something I've personally noticed also is that emotion is never disapproved of in the Greek culture of epic. Odysseus cries many a tear during his quest and a whole host of emotions play out through him, Telemachos and others.

    In the Aeneid, we find quite a different representation of culture. Although physical strength is still highly regarded - Aeneas is no weakling! - it is not as essential as other things. Patriarchy is the focus of the Aeneid. The emphasis on fatherhood is seen throughout with the dominant Jupiter (compare him to Zeus in the Odyssey..) to Anchises and Aeneas himself over his son. This strong family value is an essential componant of Roman culture that is shown in the Aeneid.

    Being a strong leader of men follows on from this. Aeneas must lead his people, not strive for his own personal glory. Duty is set higher than glory in Roman culture.
    The idea of the nation is essential to the Aeneid. In the Greek epics it was not so important but the conception of Rome and its founding is the basis of the whole Aeneid, it's central to the plot/theme/characters/message.
    Then there's emotion, which is here less free than in the Odyssey. Remember at the beginning when Aeneas holds back his emotions from his men so as to keep their spirits up? He is a much more stoic hero than a Greek would be.

    Okay these are just my ideas off the top of my head but I hope this helps. Good luck.

    What did the Romans admire? Social duty, steadfastness, and the ability to create a country on land not naturally their own.

    You can illustrate each of these three qualities using _The Odyssey_ and _The AEneid._
