As QPR prepares for its return to Division One (or, as it may be called after a League vote next month, the Coca-Cola League Championship), I thought it was time to retire the original transfer news/rumours thread created last June and start a fresh one to cover all of the comings and goings in W12 throughout the upcoming season.

As of today (with the Promotion Parade set for this evening) there have been no players or coaches officially released, signed, or re-signed. Here's where things stand at the moment, as best as I can determine:

    Under contract for 2004/05:
    Player -- signed through
    Martin Rowlands -- 04/05
    Kevin Gallen -- 04/05
    Gino Padula -- 04/05
    Gareth Ainsworth -- 04/05
    Chris Day -- 04/05
    Marcus Bean -- 04/05
    Tony Thorpe -- 04/05
    Jamie Cureton -- 04/05
    Dan Shittu -- 05/06
    Arthur Gnohere -- 05/06
    Marcus Bignot -- 04/05
    Kevin McLeod -- 04/05
    Nick Culkin -- 04/05
Wes Daly -- 04/05 (reports indicate he will not be retained)

    Out of contract:
    Manager Ian Holloway
    Marc Bircham
    Paul Furlong
    Clarke Carlisle
    Richard Edghill
    Richard Johnson
    Matthew Rose
    Steve Palmer
    Richard Pacquette
Terrell Forbes - I believe he is out of contract based on comments in the Hammersmith & Fulham Gazette
    Dennis Oli -- ditto
    Ben Walshe -- ditto
Reports indicate (http://www.queensparkrangersfc.com/papersmay15.htm) that Palmer, Pacquette, Forbes, Oli, and Walshe are not likely to be offered new deals.

    Loan ended:
Lee Camp - returned to Derby County

    Vacant:
Chief Assistant's position vacated by Kenny Jackett when he took over as manager of Swansea City

Several of the out-of-contract people will likely be re-signed in coming days/months, while several who are under contract will not likely open the new season with Rangers. It's going to be interesting to see how Holloway (I assume it will be Olly) puts together a squad to compete in Division One.

Swansea could be interested in Richard Johnson, Richard Edghill, Steve Palmer, and even Paul Furlong. (http://www.footymad.net/leagues/loadfnws.asp?id=158983&teamno=431)

Lee Camp unlikely to be sold by Derby County. (http://www.footymad.net/leagues/loadfnws.asp?id=158986&teamno=431)

Former Ranger loan player and local boy Lee Cook could be on his way to Loftus Road from Watford. (http://www.queensparkrangersfc.com/papersmay12.htm)

Sheffield United is said to be interested in Clarke Carlisle, who is out of contract. (http://skysports.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=203007&cpid=10)

The Blades are also said to be interested in Marc Bircham, who says he wants to stay with QPR. (http://www.footymad.net/leagues/loadfnws.asp?id=159101&teamno=431)

  • As Out of contract:
    Steve Palmer

    New assistant to Holloway?

PURE speculation, btw. And anyway what we really need in that position is a pure tactician IMHO.

  • Now, the BBC is also reporting (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/q/qpr/3753663.stm) that Ian Holloway is ready to sign. "Holloway, whose contract was due to expire at the end of the month, turned down the club's first offer but has agreed terms after lengthy talks." The article also reports that Holloway will name an assistant to replace Kenny Jackett, but gave no indication of who that'll be.

  • A pub-talk rumour on the LSA board and on QPRnet's message board has Fulham striker Barry Hayles coming to QPR on a free transfer. Hayles played for Holloway at Bristol Rovers and was sold to Fulham for £2 million during Olly's time there -- he scored 34 times in 66 starts for Rovers.
Quite a good buzz about this around the club, and apparently he's keen to sign for us. Ship Cureton's wages out on loan and its a perfect signing - maybe Thorpe as well. Could use Hayles pace up front - and I think its tough to expect Furlong and Gallen to play all the time.

  • New assistant to Holloway?

PURE speculation, btw. And anyway what we really need in that position is a pure tactician IMHO.While he might be a candidate if he wanted to be an assistant only, it looks like QPR doesn't want to sign him to a playing contract and he doesn't yet want to give up playing.

From a recent story in a local paper (http://www.footymad.net/leagues/loadfnws.asp?id=159322&teamno=431):
...one of the few players likely to be elsewhere come August is captain Steve Palmer. Holloway had the Honours graduate earmarked for a coaching role, but is likely to get turned down by the 36-year old defender.

Olly explained: "Steve wants to continue playing for as long as possible." Last year he almost left us for a player/coach position at Wimbledon. If Jackett at Swansea (or someone else) want to let him play and coach, I'd guess that'd be where he goes.

  • No surprise, but Paul Furlong told BBC London radio that he'd like to remain with Rangers (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/q/qpr/3731513.stm). Furs said, "We might be talking next week, but I'd love to stay at the club. It's a fantastic club, I'm a London boy and I want to stay. I'm not getting any younger and to get the opportunity to play First Division football again I'd grab, and it would be lovely to be with QPR."

  • News of the World reports (passed on by the BBC in its "gossip column") (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/3739573.stm) that QPR has "launched a bid to sign former Aston Villa and Inter Milan star Benito Carbone."

Hopefully for not too much money - but he could still be a quality DIV 1 forward though admittedly I haven't heard much about him lately.

The just-turned-32-year-old striker has scored 44 times for Fulham in 116 league starts and 58 sub appearances (and has scored 13 goals for them in other competitions). He scored 4 league goals in 10 starts and 15 sub appearances this year and netted one in the FA Cup as well. The year before, he scored 3 goals (1 Premiership, 1 Intertoto Cup, 1 UEFA Cup) and didn't play from early November to mid-April (injury?). He scored 19 goals for Fulham in Division 2 in 98/99, 9 in Division 1 in 99/00, 19 in 00/01 in their Division 1 promotion year, and 12 in 01/02 (8 Premiership, 2 FA Cup, 2 League Cup).

He played in two World Cup qualifiers for Jamaica in the last cycle, but hasn't been called up since then. However, he's said to be in a London-based Jamaica camp (http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/sports/html/20040514T220000-0500_59877_OBS_JFF_LOSES_ON_HONDURAS__VENEZUELA_GAMES.asp) set to begin on May 23rd in prep for games against Ireland and Nigeria in the UK.

    His career stats: http://www.soccerbase.com/footballlive/?MIval=players_details&playerid=10659
His page on the Fulham site: http://www.fulhamfc.com/pprofiles/displayProfile.asp?pid=15&id=313235

Someone on the LSA board said QPR's interest was published in the News of the World last weekend (couldn't find a link).

Agreed considering the constant health problems all 3 have faced in their careers. Though when Clark, Dan and Matt are healthy they are clearly ahead of Gnohere on the depth chart.Exactly. If Gnohere's wages aren't too high, he's excellent to have third or, preferably, fourth on the depth chart at that position.

  • Yesterday's Hammersmith Times reported (http://www.queensparkrangersfc.com/papers26may.htm) that Ian Holloway was "about to sign a new contract as we went to press." The paper noted that he'd "rejected a previous offer" and "was yesterday expected to put pen to paper."

More in that article on Holloway saying Rangers won't change their style of play in Division One.

Nothing yet from the official site about Holloway signing.

  • Oldham is targeting two new central defenders and one is thought to possibly be Arthur Gnohere. Frankly, I find this one hard to believe. Even if we re-sign Carlisle and Shittu is healthy for the beginning of the season, even the return of Rose shouldn't make Arthur surplus to requirements.

From the looks of the story on FootyMad (http://www.footymad.net/leagues/loadfnws.asp?id=159992&teamno=404), all they know is one player that their manager is interested in is a 25-year-old Second Division player and have mooted Gnohere as a possibility.

Likely nothing to this one, but that's what this thread is for! ;)

  • More news on the future home of Steve Palmer comes from a story in the Western Mail (http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/0600soccer/0200news/tm_objectid=14257349&method=full&siteid=50082&headline=shape-up-or-ship-out--warns-jackett-name_page.html). It says that Swansea's Kenny Jackett had contacted Norwich striker Iwan Roberts about a player-coach role, but that looks unlikely, so Jackett will still need a No. 2. The story notes that Palmer will likely be offered a coaching role only at Loftus Road and that a player-coach offer from Swansea could tempt him to come there.

  • Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock confirmed to the Sheffield Star (http://www.sheffieldtoday.net/ViewArticle.aspx?SectionID=59&ArticleID=794057) that he has been in contact with defender Clarke Carlisle about a move to the Blades. The story says that unless Sheffield United off-load some of their own players, they'll be looking to make additions without paying transfer fees and out-of-contract Carlisle and Sheffield Wednesday's released Alan Quinn are confirmed to be in talks.

  • Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock discussed with the official Blades website (http://www.sufc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10418~526632,00.html) his interest in acquiring QPR defender Clarke Carlisle, saying "He (Wednesday midfielder Alan Quinn) has made some mistakes over the years as Clarke Carlisle probably has, but Clarke is strong and aggressive and they are both the type of player we are looking for." About the state of negotiations, he said "We have spoken to the agents for Quinn, Carlisle, Andy Liddell, plus others, and heard encouraging things - but nothing definite will happen until mid-June."

    Also reported here: http://www.sportinglife.com/football/nationwide2/news/story_get.dor?STORY_NAME=nonwire_soccer/04/05/21/manual_104718.html&TEAMHD=nationwide2

  • The Sentinel in Staffordshire reports (http://www.thesentinel.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=67567&command=displayContent&sourceNode=67245&contentPK=10055615) that new 22% owner of QPR Gianni Paladini, who attempted to purchase Port Vale, will recommend Port Vale's 27-goal top scorer Steve McPhee to QPR. Paladini said, "He is one of the best players in the division. I like him, but I presume everyone wants him. If he doesn't stay at Port Vale, I would be happy to take him. I saw him six or seven times and thought he was outstanding each time. However, it would be up to the manager to decide." McPhee is currently in talks with Portugese side Beira Mar. As he is just 22 years old, some fee would be required if he moves to a British club, even though he is out of contract, although not if he moves to the continent. This is also true of possible Ranger signing Lee Cook.

On the managerial front, Paladini was reported to have said that a new contract for Ian Holloway is 99% completed.

The story also indicates that Paladini has "taken Rangers' chief scout Mel Johnson to watch Parma's Benito Carbone." While the possibility of signing Carbone was mentioned in the press in April (http://www.boardroomblues.co.uk/fhc220404.htm), it would seem to me a more serious possibility if Johnson has actually gone over to Italy to scout the player.

  • News of the World reports (passed on by the BBC in its "gossip column") (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/3739573.stm) that QPR has "launched a bid to sign former Aston Villa and Inter Milan star Benito Carbone."

  • Contract talks with manager Ian Holloway remain deadlocked, according to a May 20th story in the Fulham and Hammersmith Chronicle (http://www.boardroomblues.co.uk/fhc200504a.htm). Holloway had hoped to get things done before the Promotion Parade, according to the article, but agreement couldn't be reached.

David Davies said, "Talks over Ian's new contract continue, and are particularly robust at the moment. I'm hoping we can sort something out by the beginning of next week, especially as there are players who also need to know their future."

    According to the report,
(The Chronicle) has learned that an improved offer made to Holloway is based almost entirely on success in the First Division.

The manager, if he decides to accept, will earn little more than he currently gets in his weekly pay packet, but will earn the big bucks if Rangers make the play-offs or achieve the Holy Grail of a Premiership return.

Sources close to Holloway believe he is particularly disgruntled over what he perceives as a stingy offer.

  • The Star in Sheffield reports (http://www.sheffieldtoday.net/ViewArticle.aspx?SectionID=59&ArticleID=795822) further news about Sheffield United's pursuit of Rangers stars Marc Bircham and Clarke Carlisle.

About Bircham, it says he has "has met with United officials, including manager Neil Warnock, to discover their plans for next season," with the article further noting that "although Warnock had been expected to pursue more creative options he has clearly decided that the Canadian international's availability, combined with his financial demands, means the situation warrants further attention."

Bircham confirmed the talks and said, "I'm seeing what might be available out there. It's the sensible thing to do in the circumstances. I've got no wish to leave QPR but it would be wrong not to see what might be out there if I have to."

    About Carlisle, the article says:
With Robert Page set to leave United after being placed on the transfer list earlier this month, Warnock's interest in Carlisle is more advanced.
Bircham's arrival should not be discounted, but Warnock is already plotting further talks with the former Blackpool centre-half, who is keen to return north for personal reasons.
However, with several agents keen to enjoy a slice of any potential deal, United are also considering other options should they decide to look elsewhere.
Sheffield Wednesday's Alan Quinn and Wigan's Andy Liddell are also on Warnock's shopping list.

Agreed considering the constant health problems all 3 have faced in their careers. Though when Clark, Dan and Matt are healthy they are clearly ahead of Gnohere on the depth chart.

  • A story on Dave's QPR site gives some insight and predictions regarding player moves this summer (http://www.queensparkrangersfc.com/newsnow/newsmay21.htm). Some old news here, but also a few new names mentioned as potential additions to the Super Hoops, in particular midfielders Hyde and Watson (see bottom of post).

Ian Holloway, as reported elsewhere, is expected to return.

Likewise, Steve Palmer, Terrell Forbes, Richard Pacquette, Dennis Oli, and Ben Walshe are expected to leave.

Clarke Carlisle has expressed a desire of returning to the north to be closer to his daughter -- Sheffield United and Preston North End have expressed interest. However, because QPR has returned to the First Division, he will likely consider QPR's offer before making a move.

Matthew Rose may be offered a one-year deal and, if Carlisle departs, could end up starting alongside Big Dan.

Marc Bircham will likely be offered a deal and will likely stay. Also, it's reported that the blue/white hair will not return.

He reports Richard Edghill, Richard Johnson, and Paul Furlong are expected to be offered one-year deals.

Watford's Lee Cook is "seen as the most likely signing this summer."

With Les Ferdinand out of contract, there has been some talk of his return, although he's expressed a desire in the past not to tarnish his image at the club.

The possible signing of Fulham forward Barry Hayles is mentioned.

Arsenal young keeper Craig Holloway is said to be expected to come over for another trial this summer and could be signed as cover for returning Chris Day.

Derby County pricing Lee Camp at about £500,000 means QPR won't be in the running for his services.

Watford's Micah Hyde is out of contract and is said to suit our style. In league matches, Hyde started 25 and came on as a sub in 5 more while scoring one goal this season. Hyde has been with Watford since being purchased from Cambridge for £ 250,000 in August of '97. It sounds like Watford wanted to keep Hyde but couldn't afford his wages. According to a story at the official Watford site (http://www.watfordfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10400~523862,00.html), their manager said "Micah’s a different kettle of fish (from another released player who was on high wages) – we know that he’s been offered terms by another club and they were good enough to let us know what that figure was and that puts us out of the equation." No idea if that club was us. About Hyde's play, he said "Micah can be erratic and drives you mad sometimes but I’ve got a lot of time for him. His partnership with Gavin Mahon over the last few months has been excellent. I haven’t closed the door on Micah for good, if it doesn’t work out elsewhere he knows roughly what our ballpark figure is and I would be willing to talk to him."

Reading has released midfielder Kevin Watson who is "another player who Ian Holloway is said to be keen on signing this summer." Watson started 10 league games and made 12 league sub appearances for Reading this year. Watson came to Reading from Rotherham in 01/02 for £ 150,000. He came up through Spurs in the early/mid 90's, went on loans to Brentford, Bristol City, and Barnet, and then moved to Swindon and later Rotherham on free transfers.

  • As is being discussed in this thread, (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114446) Ian Holloway signed "a new one year rolling contract" today to remain as manager at QPR.

David Davies said, "We are delighted that Ian has put pen to paper as we firmly believe that he is the man to take this club forward."

Holloway added, "I felt it was the right job for me, as did the club, and now we can look forward to the new campaign and a new challenge," and did also utter the "P" word, saying "We’ve got to keep building to get to the promised land – the Premiership – but now we are a step closer," while noting we won't be doing any wild spending, saying "Again, I’d like to reiterate, this is a business now and we’ve got a business plan to take us forward."

Also reported by Sportinglife (http://www.sportinglife.com/football/nationwide2/news/story_get.dor?STORY_NAME=nonwire_soccer/04/05/28/manual_115512.html) who indicated Holloway "wanted assurances about his budget for next season after taking the club back to Division One."
