I am bringing a US team to Coventry for the International Children's games in July. While there, I would like the kids 13-15 year old boys to experience some of the English life. Any authentic fish n chip places, with the fish in newspapers. Please offer any ideas?

    Thanks

Take them to a good Indian restaurant. Far more representative of England than fish&chips these days anyway. And it'll be fun to see them try to finish their vindaloo without crying too much.

I coach U15 boys up north of Seattle and that sounds a trip of a lifetime.

    Details or link please.

One good experience I had regarding Coventry was leaving.

im not on the tourist board no, i happen to live here. its like everywhere, theres good and bad places, im just trying to help the guy with what to do when here.

  • I'm from LA. C'mon, there ain't many places in the world that can beat all that's here

    Eh, it aint no Blackpool...

Unfortuantely English 'life' is based in pubs so you're going to have to bring 'em back in a year or four. ;)

In all seriousness though, its a shame the season is over because I think giving US kids with an interest in soccer the experience of a professional football match on this side of the pond would have been good.

  • I'm from LA. C'mon, there ain't many places in the world that can beat all that's here...except the soccer.
    .
I'm sure you don't fall into the same idiot category, but I was chatting to a guy from LA in a bar in Santa Monica, and he started his "LA is great" sales pitch by going "you know, I can get up in the morning, get in my car, drive to the mall, do some shopping, buy some food, go and see a movie, get back in my car and drive back......Los Angeles, it's the greatest city in the world". He seemed a little disappointed to find the rest of the world had shopping malls and multiplex cinemas too.

Another guy, in the same bar as it happens, did a sales pitch of "you know...( I think the words "you know" are kind of the key to the whole thing) I can get in my car and go out and get a blow job any time I want....LA, it's the greatest city in the world".

Whether he meant the women of LA are incredibly easy, or he didn't think other countries had hookers, I didn't try to find out.

Getting in a car and doing something appeared to be a common theme, as if driving there somehow made it a better experience. Having experienced an LA freeway first-hand, I fail to see how any experience could be improved by using one.

  • Don't get too smug. I don't think going to coventry is the trip of a lieftime. i think its the ICG games and the soccer.

I'm from LA. C'mon, there ain't many places in the world that can beat all that's here...except the soccer.

lifetime.I never ever thought I'd see someone describe a trip to Coventry as, 'a trip of a lifetime'. Just goes to show how we don't appreciate what's around us especially our own cultures and surroundings. Hope you get to bring a team across soon pal.

  • I don't think there's such a thing as a 'non-authentic' chippy. Harry Ramsden's is about the only chain of chip shops, but there aren't too many of them, and they do good chips anyway. Pretty much all the others are independently owned places, more numerous in residential areas rather than in city centres, and the quality can vary.

Coventry has loads to do - i was born and bred here. We have a ice rink at Skydome Arena from which the local ice hockey team plays (Coventry Blaze, won every trophy this year) it also hosts small music events, boxing and basketball. The sports centre in the city centre is good for swimming, rollerblading, and most indoor sports (our niece's and nephews seem to spend a lot of time there anyway!!) Depending on your travel limitations Alton Towers theme park is always a good bet (Englands answer to Busch Gardens) only 1.5 hours away, or slightly nearer is Drayton Manor Park within 45mins. For those with a sweet tooth there are tours of Cadbury's chocolate factory in nearby Bournville, Birmingham. Ever tried Ski-ing? Then there is the Snowdome in Tamworth within 45mins - here you can Ski, Snowboard or ride a Toboggan.
If anyone is interested in motor vehicles you could visit the Coventry Transport Museum (also in the city centre) which has free admission too!!!
Obviously there is Shakespeare's birthplace in nearby Stratford - Upon -Avon, and Warwick and Kenilworth castle's. (maybe of more interest to you than the youngsters - but you never know)
Foodwise you will be lucky to get a chippy that wraps in newspaper, although there's no harm in asking. To try a good Indian Curry I'd strongly recommend Coundon Cuisine on Barker Butts Lane - our American friends love it there as much as us - the food is outstanding.
The main thing to remember is Coventry is central so most places are accessible within 2-3 hrs drive - Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, London - but all much quicker by train- generally about 1 hour.
Check out http://iccoventry.icnetwork.co.uk for local information.

So there you go, who said there's not much to do here in Coventry!!!!
    Hope this helps

  • I'm only messing, I was bored. There is one place that does not fit your description above.....SUNDERLAND, it has neither good nor bad places, the entire place is a cesspit.

never been, altho i been to middlesbrough and newcastle. dad has been to sunderland, when cov played em at roker park back in the 70's he got spat on from the stand above LOL

  • Are you kidding. We're from Los Angeles. We have enough Indian (and every other kind) of restaurant here. But no good English fish'n'chips.

Take them to a good Indian restaurant. Far more representative of England than fish&chips these days anyway. And it'll be fun to see them try to finish their vindaloo without crying too much.

from my experience, and the experience of other ex-pats I know, you have Indian restaurants, but you have no good indian restaurants. Unlike there, where an indian restaurant is something of a novelty, they have to be of a pretty good standard here to survive.

    great point dude!
dont forget we have the cathedral too. that can be an awesome day out. we got the olympic size swimming pool in the town centre (where the water area of the games is being held incidently), and as brook said, the transport museum is free so you cant go wrong there.
ive lived here all my life so far (20 years), and i go to university here too.
oh there is "Star City" just off the m6 about 30-40min drive from here too, thats a bit like the skydome in Coventry but it has a more American feel to the place.
As for eating, "Bangles" indian cuisine is a lovely place to eat on Far Gosford Street, its also next door to "rileys" which has about 6 snooker tables and 15 american pool tables, theres 2 or 3 english pool tables there too.
Again as i said before they are soccer nuts, we have Coventry's old and new stadium in the city, and with birmingham and other midlands places being very close you could visit, Aston Villa, Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Walsall, Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion, all these are within an hours drive. For a tour of what a very small teams ground is like Nuneaton Borough's Manor Park ground is about 20mins away also.
So you see there really is lots to do here :)
Again the offer is still there if you want to contact me about anything, i can do my best to get contact info or try and arrange stuff this side of the pond for you.
Best Of Luck with the games, and have a safe trip over here.
    Tom

yea coventry isnt great but i wudnt say its awful, but then again its what im used to, its home

  • hey,
im from coventry, was just browsing the web for coventry stuff, and found this thread. Yea the international childrens games are being held here this summer, as for taking the kids to see something, well seeing as they are all soccer nuts Coventry has "Highfield Road" which is soon to be demolished so might be worth askin if u can take em there. Also Coventry City (can u guess who my team is yet :P ) are moving to a new stadium "The Ricoh Arena", i know a few people have been there and visited the new stadium to have a look round. Again could be worth asking if you can take a group of kids round.
Soccrfn, if you want me to get you some contact details id be more than happy to, also im on MSN if u want to talk about Coventry, just email me. Ive pm'd you my address.
Look forward to hearing from you, and hope you have a safe trip over here!

    Tom

  • I dont think anyone wraps fish and chips in newspapers anymore because the ink runs. Its always just wrapped in plain paper. I'm not from that near Coventry but to be honest, they're everywhere, its not a struggle to find one, its usually just a case of how nice they are. As for things to do, like I said, I'm not near Coventry.
