What should a non-married widow with 4 kids do, what papers to file & what benefits will she get?
My friend's fiancee was killed in a car accident leaving her with 2 step children and 2 of his own. She's emotionally destroyed and we all trying to help her. I figured to ask here if anyone else was in the same situation. She's 29 with 4 children, 4yrs, 2yrs, 1 yr and a month old. What should she apply for and where to get it? public housing! food stamps! social security (He was only 26 when he passed away with outstanding dept), the house was not under her name.. Her family and his family are offering everything they can. Should she get a lawyer? if so, any recommendations? any idea what forms she should fill? where to go to get the forms? any sites I should send her tom so she can get an idea on the steps she should take? She is a dear friend and I am just trying to help her. Thank you in advance.
tell her to contact the mortuary that handled her late fiance's body/death cert. they will direct her to an attorney that may be handling his probate case and also may direct her and give her advice. theyre very good and gentle about that. also, she can check with social security office to file any ss benefits for her AND her/his children as they are equally entitled to survivors benefits while the children are minors and while in school.
she can also check with women's services that are offered in these cases. try the city or county clerks office also. any one of these places can direct her to the proper facilities, organizations etc. good luck peace

Firstly, I think she must seek professional legal help as soon as possible.
Mainly because, as you say she was his fiancee (not wife) and there are 'step children' involved.
The children's mother / or blood relative may want the kids back. This would cause major disruption on top of everything else, especially if all children have grown so close.
