What should I do about my shelter issue?

Published by: wktd 2008-11-26

  • I adopted a puppy from my local shelter seven months ago. I love her and thankfully she is now healthy, but she didn't seem to receive proper care at the shelter. We gave the shelter the money on a Thursday afternoon and she wasn't sent to the Vet until Monday morning. This didn't seem normal to me, is it? She was suppose to show up to the vet to be checked out, spayed, and given her shots, but when we showed up they said they thought she might have parvo. The watched her and did some test and thank goodness she only had an upper respiratory infection which cleared up. The animal control officers there didn't seem to care much for the dogs, or the people visiting them. I just felt uncomfortable there in general. Then while looking for a dog park (I googled my city's name and dog) I came across this article: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/...

I was shocked, it was an isolated incident, but someone's pet died because someone missed a memo. I want to rescue a new dog within the next few years, but I'm now unsure about giving this organization any money. If I don't rescue a dog from them then they just have another dog they could possibly kill, and if I do they will have more money to take care of their animals. But to some extent I feel like I'm helping them kill a dog that just hasn't found the right people yet. What do you think? Is there anything I can do to help the shelter animals in my area?

  • Call a local news team and ask them to do a story on the shelter.

  • AS far as your own dog..

The shelter gets the dogs to the vet when they can.. they often rely on vets who VOLUNTEER their time and services, and the vet may have only been available monday.

Parvo can also incubate up to 10 days in a dog's system.. you cant blame a shelter for a dog being sick when you pick it up. They do their best to keep the shelter clean and disenfected, but they cannot guarantee that a dog is free of disease.. the animals are stressed and it increases the chances of becoming ill.. if a dog is sick from the pound, the fault lays with the heartless owners who dump unvaccinated dogs.. not with the shelter.

Shelter workers are often over-worked and understaffed. Many of them are volunteers and are not paid for being there. Its stressful work.. If you're not comfortable adopting from that particular shelter, then find another shelter or rescue in your area to adopt from.. there's plenty around www.petfinder.com

I think the article you posted was an accident.. it happens. I've heard of it happening in other shelters. That doesnt mean the shelter is a bad shelter. The worker who euthanized the dog failed to nitice that the owners were getting the dog.. human error.

  • Tell the BBB.
    Thats sad.

  • That is horrible news. So very sad that something like that would happen. It is odd that your dog took so long to go to the vets, and everything else. However, just because of that, and a mistake that was made, doesn't mean that some other doggie there doesn't deserve a good home. Don't look at it as giving them money, look at it as saving a life.

  • A good way to solve your problem would be to Volunteer as much as you can at that shelter. Ask the owners of the shelter this question if they decide to put down a dog that has a perfectly good chance at life. "Does his/her life have any less value than yours? Would you like it if you suddenly were homeless but went to a shelter? and after you got to the shelter, the owners or the doctor there decided to euthanize you?" For whatever he answers, see if it is possible to foster the dog, and then get the news station to do a story on that shelter. After you get a story on it, hopefully the shelter will be shut down or sold to a better owner. Then bring the dog you fostered to a better shelter or try to find someone to adopt him.

  • I prefer to adopt from no-kill shelters. They pull dogs from kill shelters and accept dogs that otherwise would have ended up in kill shelters.

For every dog you take from a no-kill shelter, they are able to pull one from a kill shelter.

A good no-kill rescue group usually health tests the animals, learns their temperament, gets them UTD on all vet care, and really take the time to match you with the right pet.

And be sure to speak out about Backyard Breeders and Puppy Mills. They are the reasons dogs end up in shelters. http://www.pbrc.net/breeding3.html

  • There is an excellent shelter in Ft. Worth, on Lancaster...
and not all shelters can have on site vets, this one does all the time...maybe the Dallas shelter just got confused and thought the dog had been sent.

You can report them to the local media, or to the City Council of Dallas, the BBB will not step in on a shelter, they never have..

it is very nice and clean and they really care for the aninals...since you showed the article of Dallas, is it too far for you to drive to Ft. Worth....they have always kept the place and animals there well cared for and been there many many years.

    good luck....

and I am sorry you experienced this kind of stuff from any shelter.

  • I find it more shcoking that the owners are asking for over $200 000 in 'lost earnings' for their male cross bred dog!

  • It is expensive to keep all the animals in the shelter. They can't possible groom every animal that comes in-as there are just too many to manage.

All shelters/pounds will fed, water and walk the dog/dog and other animal in there care and worm it.
No matter how hard they try, disease & illness is hard to prevent in a shelter. Its not the shelter fault for letting the dog get sick. It happens in such a large environment.

I adopted my two rescue cats from a shelter! Both of them had cat flu, Yes the 1st vet we had, gave us the wrong medication! Surely a vet would know what they were doing!
We had to go back and get another medication. However both vets presumed both cats had the same form of catflu!

I disagree as both had different symptoms-the 18month old was coughing like she had furball, but no result, she also had gunky eyes, and sneezing.

The 2yr old cat was only sneezing, didn't have a cough, didn't have the gunky eyes.

Sadly they both died in a housefire soon after we adopted them. We got the cats on 30th & 31st may 2007 and they both died on 14 july 2007

Yes I do NOT blame the shelter for the mistake, when two cats live in the same house, it easy to presume that they have the same form of cat flu.

i NOW visit an animal shelter in Keysborough-Yes I see cats listed there as Suitable with other cats-and observed the cats behave which is Not actually suitable with other cats! There was a cat called Chole who was listed as suitable with other cats, when i was there she chased of another cat called Puss E CAT from eating her food! This Is Not what I called Suitable with other cats!

Another cat called Tulip was fine with other cats as LONG as they weren't BLACK! I saw Tulip chase of 1st a black cat called Raven, and then another time we went, I saw her attempt to chase of Black fluffy Puss E Cat, however another catcalled Lana, decided she intervene and started what look like stalking Tulip- However this slow stalking and staring moving was enough to stop Tulip from chasing Puss E cat-Lana made no attempt to fight, neighter did Puss E cat.!

Both these times were went where different days but both were at the same shelter.

Yes and some of the cats here do have matts in there coat- nothing to do with poor hygine or anything like that, its just they don't have the volunteer or time to groom the cats that need daily grooming with all the other work that involved with caring for shelter animals.

In australia, all shelter/pounds, they do is give us forms to fill in and the adoption takes place, there no checking of the house or backyard. the only thing that they check is-is if you have a current dog, they require you to bring it in to see if its compatable with the potential adoptee. If it is compatable the adoption will take place, if not, then adoption does not take place.

  • Yes it is heart breaking and I totally understand where you are coming from ,but as a avid volunteer for my local shelter let me paint a scenario for you.
6am. You arrive for work at a shelter that holds 100 dogs yet there is 150 dogs and you know you are going to have to put down 20 dogs because they do not have enough food or room for them. Oh no. You look at the door of the shelter and someone over night tied 8 dogs to the door with a note. "We cant take care of them anymore".
8am The Shelter opens and you have 25 dogs and cats to spay or neuter. 20 dogs to put down. 50 dogs to give check ups. You also have 14 outside spay/neuters coming in and 10 personality tests to give so you can help get these other dogs adopted. Oh wait did I mention there are only 3 vets there?
