I would call myself a novice in the photography world, but I'm really looking forward to getting better.

As with most activities, the quality of the tools are only significant in the hands of an experienced and capable user. Trust me, great golf clubs wouldn't make me any better. But there are those duffers who always have the newest driver or putter.

Get a camera you can afford and which feels comfortable to you and then learn to take pictures.
Sorry, can't answer that question for you. You have to decide what is the right camera for you. It would help maybe if you gave us an idea what you would like to do with the camera that you want.
