Also, DVD-R are compatible to all DVD players old and new.
DVD R+ are for newer DVD drives and the DVD R- are for any DVD drive as you are on a vista laptop i am pritty shore any disc will work have fun with the backing-up as it will take some time.

I personally use DVD+R for my back-ups it does not matter which one you use just as long as your computer will accept the R+ or the R-
Well that depends on your burner. Some will only burn one or the other, even though most now days will burn either. I have found that on some burners one works better than another. You would have to just see which works best for you. It is a safe bet to start with the + ones though.
DVD R+ are recommended.
