I recently got a tattoo and I absolutely LOVE it. However, the next day while it was just beginning to scab (the tattoo is on my lower hip) a friend came over and sat herself on my lap. When I looked at it, it appeared to be a little bit smudged. Will this harm the tattoo itself once its healed? She didn't sit down very hard, and got up immediately once she realized that she had sat on my fresh tattoo, however it did hurt and I'm kinda nervous. I plan on calling my artist and going to have it looked at, but I'd like to get some outside opinions...

  • Ok first of all some of these answers really scare me, please educate yourself by using credible sources. You can't "smudge" a tattoo it's not possible. DO NOT let hot water beat on the tattoo, OMG!!! Any way the best thing to do is wash it 2-3 times a day in luke warm water using a antibacterial, dye and fragrence free soap such as dial or dove, using your finger tips gently wash the tattoo ALWAYS wash your hands before touching the tattoo. The leading cause of infections in tattoo's is dirty hands. Your tattoo is fine. Take care of it and ENJOY!!! By the way I've been involved in the industry for 17 years in case you were wondering.

  • Hop in the shower, make sure it's a little hot, as it'll take some of the heat out. Wash it GENTLY (no washcloth) but use non-smell, anti-bacterial soap. When you get out, PAT it dry..please don't rub it. Put on some of your A&D ointment and then see how it looks.
When I got one of my first foot tats, I wore flip flops one day like a dummy, and the ink started to push out, but it looks fine now. Just be careful careful careful. Give it a few weeks to heal, and take really good care of it. If it "smudged," which is highly unlikely, as the ink is in your skin, not outside of it...there's nothing that your artist can do about it, for two weeks, sometimes three, since you got it.

  • It just sounds like some ink was still bleeding out of your tattoo. It should be fine. Make sure you keep it really clean though and apply a thin layer of Aquaphor over your tattoo after each wash of when it starts feeling dry. Aquaphor is the best thing for tattoos i still put it on all of mine to help retain the color.

  • a tattoo needle goes into about 3 layers of skin, something rubbing on it wont smudge it. You should wash your tattoo with dial soap 2-3 times a day with clean hands until it quits flaking off then start putting an unscented lotion (I recommend skin healing lubraderm) on it. It's should take about 3 weeks to heal. Aftyer that, if it still looks 'smudged, or the person just didn't do a very good job, go back for a touch up, most places will do it for free.

  • Nah it should be fine, I have one in the same spot and I broke the rules and went tanning the day after I got it... DOn't worry about it

  • Once it's in it's pretty much in. I went swimming a day after I got my tattoo and it hasn't faded.
