Whats the difference between a "roast" speech and a "toast" speech?

Published by: rose 2009-01-09

  • In the roast, you tease and make fun of the guest of honor -tell wacky, enbarrasing stories and such. Big laughs.

In the toast, which us usually very brief, you say things that are entirely complementary to honor the guest, finish by raising a glass of wine or whatever as a "toast" to the guest.

  • A roast is an event in which an individual is subject to publicly bearing comedic insults, praise, outlandish true and untrue stories, racial stereotypes and heartwarming tributes. ...

A toast is someone or something in honor of which people usually have a drink, the drink or honor itself, or the act (pledge) of indicating that honor.

So a roast would be done at more casual events and a toast would be done at more sophisticated events. Either can be done at a wedding, IMO, depending on the crowd and families attending.
