When it comes to Digital SLR

  • Nikon or Canon ?

  • My hubby and I both use Nikons. He digital, I'm still stuck on film.

  • Do any of Nikon's present day AF cameras have focusing screens like the old manuals?

When you get into the upper levels of cameras, like the Canon 1D series or the Nikon D1/D2 series, you can change the focus screen to one of the split screens like back in the day. Ksmattfish has also changed his on the 20D from what my memory is telling me but you'd have to ask him about that.

  • It's impossible to answer that question without knowing which specific models you have in mind. I would pick the Nikon D70 over the Canon digital Rebel in a heart beat but would take the 10D or 20D over the D70. In order to give you good advice, we'd have to know which level of DSLR you're looking to buy.

    exactly.

also, the best autofocusing canons that i know of are their high end DSLRs (most notbly the 1dmkII if i remember correctly).

  • I agree with Photogoddess completely, without knowing what level you're looking at and what you're shooting I can't blindly assume which brand will work best for you. We shoot with both Canon and Nikon cameras and like them both for different reasons.

We're both Canon girls that hooked up with Nikon boys and now we swing both ways. Now I know why we're soul sisters. ;)

So Deviant26, exactly what models are you considering?

  • So Deviant26, exactly what models are you considering?

Well I was aiming for Nikon until Canon got so many votes.
Ive heard the Nikon has a nice fat grip, and the lens's are compatible with any other nikon camera. basically thats all I know, the technical stuff I dont know what is really valuable, and not so valuable.

Canon have new censor technology that kind of acts like a pixel based light compressor/limiter effectively allowing the camera to capture a much wider dynamic range.

Im not sure what you mean, do you mean that this tech will be the standard in a few years.? Somethig all other companies will soon follow?

    thx
when I do purchase my camera, ill let ya all know what I got. And ill also post a bunch of pictures I took with my current camera.. Powershot A300 (yes a basic digi camera) thats why im upgrading. :)
  • Advantage of digital slr cameras - an explanation::
The lack of noise in photos is one advantage of digital SLR cameras when it comes to picture quality, but not the only one. Another advantage is SLRs’

  • im going for Canon..................but thats just because i never had a Nikon. But im lovin it (sounds like a McDonalds commercial..................darn, now im hungry)

  • OK, now where do I start????? As long as those "third" party guys can't participate.

  • I have to be honest... I've never shot with nikon... I'm perfectly happy with my canon system and see no need to switch.

I have to be honest... I've never shot with a canon.... I'm more than happy with my Nikon system and see no need to switch. :lmao: :lmao:  :lmao: :lmao: Love my Nikons!

Having said that, I made the decision to go Nikon in 1969 and have never looked back. What I like about the Nikon system is they have built and upgraded there system so that they have never left obsolete there prior camera bodies. The 1986 400 f/3.5 or 300 f/2.8 manual focus lenses I own works perfectly well on my D1X. On the D50/D70/D100 bodies, it will mount but would need to have a chip added to meter. Not a big expence so I feel its an advantage. I believe the D70 is more rugged than the canon version. I know my D1's have been through he11 and back and still function perfectly. My D1 is a 1999 body, the D1X a 2002 body, they have frozen, been in the rain and salt, shot at dirt track car races and boat races. Never missed a beat.

You may (or may not) concider this type of issue in terms of future compatibility if you're likely to spend a lot of money on lenses.

I guess I should point out that these new sensors aren't currently in use and most likely won't be for a few years yet. It's just an example. ;)

  • depends on really how much your looking to spend

    20D > D70/D50 > Rebel

  • With a budget around $1000 - I'm voting for the Nikon D70! I've used both and IMO it's a superior camera to the D-Rebel... more bang for the buck! And we've shot landscapes side by side with my 10D and my boyfriend's D70 and I like the quality right out of the D70 better.

  • Canon has better autofocus and generally better camera bodies, but nikon has a slight edge on lenses and their flash systems are better. so it really depends on more than just the body.

Really? I havn't been to pleased with the AF on the 20D.

  • It really does depend on the model of camera that Deviant is considering. Having shot with both Canon and Nikon gear on a regular basis, I can see pros and cons to both.... depending on the model. Sound like broken record yet?

  • My answer is purely based on no knowledge or experience and the fact I own a canon ;) LOL sorry can't help ya mate.

  • i am a Canon fan personally, i have never used a Nikon really, but i love how Canons are layed out as far as their menus and over all use

but like i said i am a Canon fan, if they started to make cereal i would so put back the box of Tony the Tiger for the Canon 'Os

  • It's impossible to answer that question without knowing which specific models you have in mind.

Well Im looking to spend around a $1000. I take a lot of nature and love macro photo. Hope that helps and thx for the votes so far, I woudl have thought the opposite.
Auto Focus is good, but if I can focus a better picture manually, I'll do that.

Eric - Canon AF systems are a bit quirky. Once you figure out how they tick, they are really quite good.

  • I have to be honest... I've never shot with nikon... I'm perfectly happy with my canon system and see no need to switch.

  • Sure glad I shoot Minolta, I would hate to be in this debate for the rest of my life. Canon vs. Nikon, Nikon vs. Canon, 350 vs. D70, G vs. L, Canon vs. Nikon.......... I love when someone ask a question, like. Is the Nikon d70 good? Then Canon guy chimes in and says something to the sort, that's a very nice camera, but I felt the Rebel XT had better ergos and if you do not have a lens base yet you should take a closer look at Canon. And then Canon and Nikon guy slowly one up each other going from XT to D2s untill they have been through the entire product line. That's great due it some more.
