as in past tense, and you might possibly do somthing eg you could eat that pie
'I can' means the same as 'I am able to'.
I could = I was able to (past tense).
Apart from being the past tense of can, could (as well as would and should) are also used at the beginning of a question or request, to make it sound more polite.
Could you play a little more quietly?
Would you mind closing the door?
Shouldn't you be in bed by now?
