Debt is only on paper. As many US banks are finding out. Except in the US if you default on a mortgage, the bank at least gets the house/land.
If we default on China's loans, they get nothing. Except maybe they get told to pound sand.
Many US companies had assets in Iran. What do you think happened to them when the Jimmy Carter helped the Islamic extremists take over that country and 20% of the world's oil ? They lost those assets.
