  • My Mom has Malteses and I have Yorkies so I have been around both for quite some time. I prefer the Yorkies over Malteses. A well bred Yorkie requires less grooming because their hair does not matt as bad and it is a firmer texture and not cottony. They dry a lot faster than a Maltese after bathing and you don't have the cottony hair floating in the air. Because of the darker coloring, you don't have to combat the tear stains.

Malteses are much more likely to nip and dislike children and strangers in general - more of a one person dog. They are also more likely to nip their owners while being brushed or doing something else they prefer not to do.

I would say the Yorkie has a higher activity level, but not hyper or demanding.

Her Malteses definitely bark more. While mine do bark when someone comes to the door. The Malteses bark at any noise. My Yorkies are fine in a hotel room, but hers bark at every single noise they hear.

The food requirements are the same depending on weight.

Malteses potty train more easily. Both can learn tricks, but the Yorkies seem more willing and are just generally more playful as they get older.

I think Yorkies are capable of bonding to more than one person, but do have their favorite. Malteses seem more attached to one person and not willing to let others in.

Neither of us let our puppies go before a minimum of 11 weeks. You can get a good estimate of a puppy's size at maturity by tripling its weight at 8 weeks or doubling it at 12 weeks. I find this to be pretty accurate as long as the puppy is at a healthy weight and not being underfed or recovering from an illness. Go buy a food scale with a bowl on top at Walmart for about $12.00 and weigh the puppy yourself.

Quick pointers, but I suggest you really research what a proper Yorkie should look like so you will be able to identify the faults. All Yorkie puppies are absolutely adorable no matter what the quality, so be sure and see both of the parents and judge them because your puppy will grow up. So many breeders chop off all their hair so you can't see how poor their coats are which is so important in a Yorkie. A properly bred Yorkie's coat is not that hard to maintain and all of my Yorkies are in full coats that touch the ground.

When choosing a Yorkie, look for small ears and a shorter nose. They should be between 4 and 6 pounds full grown. There is a huge difference in size between a 4 pounder and a 6 pounder. The hair should be straight, not wavy at all, and especially not curly. The back should be straight. The front legs should also be straight and not bow out. The preferred coloring is blue and gold, not a washed out silver or blonde coloring (see Mom and Dad as a puppy will not show this yet). The brown of the Yorkie will lighten with age (and sometimes the black will turn silver - not good). There is a line out of Mexico that the brown does stay pretty dark and does not lighten to the preferred gold. Although not show quality because of this, the remaining characteristics are very strong.

  • Definetely the Yorkie is better.

  • interesting question. I have been debating the same thing myself. So I will give you a star!
